Star Students Calendar Math 12/11-12/15 12/23-1/7 – Winter Break Literacy This week we will continue daily practice of our Jolly Phonics sounds and sight words. Please continue to support this at home daily. Our book of the week is “The Mouse” and the sight word is “of”. In Reading Workshop students will learn a new reading strategy called “Skippy the Frog”. With this strategy, students will learn to skip over a word they don’t know, read the rest of the sentence and see if that helps them figure it out. In Writing Workshop we will take some time to work in some grammar lessons from the Writing Fundamentals Grammar Unit. We will read books that model different grammar rules; such as when to use a capital letter. Students will learn the criteria for success to achieve 5 star writing. 5 star writing includes: spaces between words, punctuation, capitals at the start of sentences, sight words spelled correctly and lower case letters for all of the other letters. Students will even learn how to self-assess their writing so that they can see what criteria they have met, and what criteria they still need to work on. Math This week in Math, students will continue to work on addition concepts in Module 6. They will be practicing writing addition equations where “putting together” and “adding to” is represented. The children are spending a lot of time playing a variety of games that involve adding numbers together. They use dice, dominoes and math racks. This hands-on learning is not only fun for them, but reinforces our math concepts and allows for great math talks.
