Reading at St. Thomas’ Primary Good evening and welcome along to our input on Reading. I am Stacey Walker, class teacher of P7 and PT for the upper school.. Danielle… Jess. This evening we are going to talk to you about some of the resources and strategies that we use in our school to develop reading skills.

Primary 1 - 3 Resources Strategies

Primary 1 - 3 Jolly Phonics Programme Sounds divided into sets Songs, actions, sight activities, writing opportunities Blend to create words Jollyphonics ----- big book Sounds that are split into sets children can start to create basic words through the strategy of blending. EG - set 1 s a t p i n sat pat pin Teach through songs, ANTS ON MY ARM actions, sight activities. TREASURE HUNT   Storyworld ------ book Start off with stage one of Storyworld and it intro Basic common words Teachers model by reading aloud asking children to follow with fingers and read along, lft to right recognises saes and diferent words Encourage volume, clarity, fluency, expression (recognising punctuation) Along with books Words covered in each stage are sent home to practice – suggested games – FIND ON THE FRIDGE, make a sentence Have plenty of opportunity to experience the words through class reading and activities which helps child to recognise the word. Move through story world 1-3, for some children P4. Tricky words ---- Mat Are also practiced in class to help develop reading. And lists are often sent home in homework for extra practice. Tricky words are words that cannot be sounded out and so are learned through sight You can practice these through multisensory games rainbow, shaving foam…… LSCWC Comprehension In terms of developing children’s comprehension teachers in the lower years will use questioning to encourage analytical skills during reading for example, main characters, where did the story take place…… questions will become more complex as they move through the year and schoo Example Can you summarises the main points etc…. Can you clarify the meaning of the word……. Peculiar Further develop through comprehension texts range of genres Comprehension is key within reading A child can get to p5 and can read aloud exceptionally well However may not necessarily be able to analyse and pick apart the text and so we use a range of reading strategies to help the child take meaning from the text which Miss McAdam will talk to you about with dicuss P4-P7
