Meet Sarah Roth and 1st Grade at ISS Welcome! Meet Sarah Roth and 1st Grade at ISS

Sarah Roth Born in Panama Bolivia for 3 years Left at 18 to attend the University of Notre Dame Peace Corps Volunteer in Bolivia for 3 years Earned my Masters in Education at Teachers College, in NYC New York City public school teacher for 6 years This is my 4th year teaching 1st Grade at ISS!

Special Events & Activities Morning Drop Off & Afternoon Pick-Up Students can enter the classroom at 7:50 AM Please get a late pass from the office if you are tardy (after 8:00 AM) 3:00 PM student dismissal I will work with students (teacher-parent agreement), providing after school reinforcement, starting promptly after 3:00 PM dismissal Special Events & Activities Enrichment classes Science Fair Morning Circle Presentations Math Buddies Publishing Parties

Reading and Writing Genres Stories, persuasive literature, nonfiction, poetry We focus on one genre at a time in both reading and writing, so that students deepen their understanding and appreciation of each genre. Writing Process in each Unit of Study

Phonics and Word Work Phonics (letter sounds & spelling patterns, i.e. ou) Word Work (Words Their Way and Jolly Phonics) Differentiated Instruction and Practice in Small Groups through various “centers” Examples: Rhyming sorts Long/short vowel sorts Reading/singing a Poem Practicing writing “sight words” that we put on the “Word Wall”

Math Common Core State Standards In 1st grade I will teach: Engage NY and I create my own student worksheets Students will also use manipulatives and play games to have concrete tools that they can use to show their thinking. In 1st grade I will teach: Addition, Subtraction => in Word Problems Place Value Measurement Represent and Interpret Data (ex: Graphing) Geometry Tell and Write Time

Science Next Generation Science Standards taught with the online curriculum Called Mystery Science. Students investigate and learn concepts from the 3 main branches of Science: Life, Earth, and Physical 1st Quarter: Earth Science- Space: Patterns and Cycles Earth Science 2nd Quarter: Life Science - Structure, Function, and Information Processing: plants and animals use their external parts to help them survive, grow, and meet their needs patterns in behavior of parents and offspring that help offspring survive 3rd Quarter: Students go through Scientific Process and present what they have learned during the Science Fair. 4th Quarter: Physical Science - light, how it travels and using it as a tool to communicate
