Family Relationships By: Mr. Plumb

Bell-Ringer/Journal Entry Tell me about your family

Activity 1: Think about your favorite family event, day, or vacation and draw it on a piece of paper. We will be presenting them to the entire class.

Relationships Relationship- a connection a person has with another person Who can you have a relationship with? Do you think you have a good relationship with these people? Where do you think the best place is to learn and practice relationship skills? Noodle Example

Family Guidelines In most families the parents and guardians have family guidelines that they expect you to follow Family Guidelines- rules a family makes to help members live in a responsible way What are some family guidelines that you are expected to follow in your own family?

Family Guidelines Cont. Why is it important to follow family guidelines? They prepare you for adulthood They protect you from harm They teach you responsibility

Types of Family Relationships There are 2 types of family Relationships Healthful Relationships Relationship that promotes mutual respect and responsible behavior Dysfunctional Relationships Relationship that does NOT promote mutual respect and responsible behavior

Ways to Develop Healthful Family Relationships Make time for family members Sharing Bathroom, tv, computer, etc. Complete all chores on time Show appreciation by recognizing kindness and saying “thank you” Use 1-Messages instead of U-Messages when you are upset or angry Respect Family members belongings Respect Privacy

Activity: Skit Students will get into groups of about 4 and perform a skit in front of the whole class. If a group does not want to perform the skit, they can write it down instead and then read it out loud to the class The skit will be to perform a healthful family relationship. You can use one of the 7 ways in the last slide to give you an idea of what you can perform Example: If you and one of your siblings argue about sharing the bathroom and tv all the time you can compromise and while one of you use the bathroom the other can watch tv and then you switch. I will give you 15 minutes to come up with a quick skit and then we will perform them.

Exit Slip: Family Relationship Worksheet What is one way it is important to follow family guidelines? Write down who you think you have the healthiest relationship with in your family and explain why.
