MINORITY AND GENERATIONAL RECRUITMENT STRATEGIES

Minority Recruitment – Why does it matter? The frequency of underlying risk factors for some cancers differs among racial and ethnic groups Some of these factors result from: Genetic variants that are more common in certain subpopulations than in others Lifestyle and socioeconomic issues which influence risk bias Research participants should be representative of the people who will benefit as a result of the study

Minority Recruitment – Where can I find them? The first step in engaging minorities in clinical trials is finding them: 70% of African Americans reside in 2,500 out of 38,000 zip codes 50% of Hispanics reside in 1,500 out of 38,000 zip codes Native Americans reside mostly in tribal areas These minority populations are served by approximately 500 hospitals and 40,000 primary care physicians* *National Health Index

Minority Recruitment – How do we engage with them? Shared characteristics and strategies among minority subpopulations: Ask for Physician referrals Conduct outreach through local religious institutions and community leaders Build trust, educate participants, and raise awareness through community-based organizations Elicit the support of trusted community leaders Make participants feel that they are valued and appreciated Assign someone of the same minority group as part of the recruitment team Engage with the caregiver
