Before you change an historic building you must understand how it works Works be in accordance with the internationally recognised conservation principles as defined in the Burra Charter (1981), which has been adopted by ICOMOS (the International Council of Monuments and Sites) and is frequently utilised by Governments as a measure of best-practice conservation. Four principles of conservation are contained within the Burra Charter - plus the (equally) important principle of sustainable development.
