Business Strategy is an overview of competition and business success for design, construction, real estate, and building products firms. For whom? Target = GSD student with little business background who expects to be a leader in a firm and needs some basics about successful companies compete. About what? How to think and communicate about leading a firm. How is it taught? Participant Centered Learning: A different HBS Case Study to discuss every class. What will I learn? Market selection, product focus, basic income/expense concepts, and issues in how expertise in sustainability can lead to competitive advantage for firms. How is it graded? Sustainable Cities looks at a set of approaches to the twin problems of rapid urbanization and increasing scarcity of resources like energy, water, clean air, and land For whom? Target = HBS or GSD leader in addressing problems of urbanization, business, and environment. About what? Skills and strategies for making a difference in cities and environment, focusing on: value of design, impact of private sector entrepreneurship and finance, reducing demand. How is it taught? Participant Centered Learning: A different HBS Case Study to discuss every class. What will I learn? Context and tools for promoting private sector approaches to problems of cities and environment How is it graded? Class participation and 4-hour final exam. Prerequisites? Development, Design, and Construction is an overview of the process of creating value through design and entrepreneur- ship. For whom? Core target = HBS students who expect to be involved in developing buildings, campuses, and cities. About what? How to think about creating new value in the built environment. How is it taught? Participant Centered Learning: A different HBS Case Study to discuss every class. What will I learn? How design creates value. Market assessment. Bringing a vision to life. Basics of commercial real estate finance. Project management and construction highlights. How is it graded? Combination of class participation and final team project (based on an HBS case study).
