Y1 M4d. Can understand that 𝟏 𝟒 represents one of four equal parts of a whole = teacher notes

Teacher information This resource should be used to support Key Marginal pupils for whom you have completed a PLC. It is designed to be delivered as a teaching activity to a small group or individual in order to fill a gap in their understanding. There is no expectation to use the PowerPoint in its entirety. Choose the methods and resources that suit your school’s approach to fractions. Use of this resource should form part of normal, day-to-day teaching, as you would do with a guided teaching group. This teaching resource is based on the National Curriculum expectations for Key Stage 1, with a focus on the laser-sharp statements from the PiXL PLC.

Teacher information We will start by revising what 𝟏 𝟐 is. If children show misconceptions, go back and complete the previous therapies. When looking at what 𝟏 𝟐 is, children should be able to work with paper of different shapes. This needs to be prepared before the session.

LORIC Our Primary Edge attributes help us to become better learners and today is no exception. Before you start this activity, here are some ideas for how you will need your Charlie Communication skills today: Share your ideas Create different representations Give specific descriptions Command Words: Create Write Describe Contribute

Developing Communication Skills Use this activity to help children develop their communication skills before you begin the therapy. Look at the objects. How many is 𝟏 𝟐 ? Explain. Why is this 𝟏 𝟐 ?

What I Will Be Looking For Today You will have lots of chances to demonstrate your communication skills today. Here’s what I’ll be looking for: Sharing your own ideas as part of a group Creating different ways to represent 𝟏 𝟒 Good explanations

What does this word mean? Equal

Revision: What is 𝟏 𝟐 ? Finding 𝟏 𝟐 is the same as finding one of two equal parts. 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 Find the shape that is not divided into 𝟏 𝟐 . Explain how you know. 1 2

Finding 𝟏 𝟒 is the same as finding one of four equal parts. What is 𝟏 𝟒 ? Finding 𝟏 𝟒 is the same as finding one of four equal parts. 𝟏 𝟒 one quarter

Model: folding paper We can show 𝟏 𝟐 using paper. Fold again to show 𝟏 𝟒 . Find a half by folding a piece of paper in half. Then model finding a half and then halving again to create quarters. Write on each part ¼. Make it clear to the children that all 4 quarters are the same as (equal to) a whole.

Your Turn: folding paper Take a piece of paper. Fold it into quarters. Find a half by folding a piece of paper in half. Then model finding a half and then halving again to create quarters. Write on each part ¼. Make it clear to the children that all 4 quarters are the same as (equal to) a whole. Write 𝟏 𝟒 on each quarter.

Why is this piece of paper not folded into quarters? Explaining quarters Why is this piece of paper not folded into quarters? Use real paper to let the children to explore closer.

Is this piece of paper folded into quarters? Explaining quarters Is this piece of paper folded into quarters? Use real paper to let the children to explore closer. This example shows quarters even though the paper has been folded in a different way when compared to our original paper. Emphasise that as long as we have four equal parts then we can call them quarters.

Understanding quarters Now it’s your turn! Choose some paper from your table and fold it into quarters. Use real paper to let the children to explore closer. Challenge: How many ways can you make quarters from the same shape?

Teacher information Show Me Tasks Once the therapy has been delivered you can use Show Me Tasks to demonstrate that the skill is now secure. They are not intended to be completed all at once and ideally should be done in intervals of a few days after the therapy has been delivered. The challenge in the tasks is progressive.

Circle the piece of paper that does not show quarters. 1 4 1 4 Show Me Tasks Y1 M4d.
