Next-Generation Search Engines -Perspective and challenges Han Liu Department of Computer Science University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign hanliu@ncsa.uiuc.edu April 21th. 2005

Ultimate Goal of Search Engines A “Perfect” Search Engine - Act exactly the same as a “knowledgeable” human expert - Use the whole Internet as his memory - Tell us the most suitable thing we want immediately - Evolve simultaneously with Internet Google vs. “Perfect” search Engine ? - Image, audio, videos could not be retrieved well - Junk information results from keyword matching - Human-computer communication is efficient enough 2005-4-21 Han Liu

Possible Solutions Natural Language Processing for HCI (short term) - Real-time speech recognition - Fuzzy semantic understanding - Real-time response to user’s voice instructions (I will fund this project, it’s more practical!) Large-Scale Knowledge Base (long term goal) - Current IR relies too much mathematical models - Traditional AI may be still useful 2005-4-21 Han Liu
