Winning with an HSA

Winning with an HSA Speaker Notes: HealthEquity is the oldest and largest dedicated health savings account custodian, and because of that we are passionate about HSAs and their ability to empower our members to build health savings for their future/ retirement With the healthcare industry being as complex and ever-changing as it is, none of us really know what insurance we might have in the future or what medical expenses we may encounter. Because of that, it makes sense to try to plan and save for those future expenses, just like we plan and save for retirement, and an HSA is ultimately the best way to do that… so let’s talk about why…. HealthEquity, Inc., does not provide legal, tax, financial or medical advice. Always consult a professional when making life changing decisions.

Why choose an HSA? Save now: Lower monthly insurance premiums HSA contributions aren’t taxed Qualified medical expenses are tax-free1 Save for the future: HSA funds roll over year after year You keep the money even if you change jobs or insurance plans Tax-free interest earned Simple investment options Same: doctors, network, negotiated discounts 1. HSAs are never taxed at a federal income tax level when used appropriately for qualified medical expenses. Also, most states recognize HSA funds as tax-free with very few exceptions. Please consult a tax advisor regarding your state's specific rules.

Two parts: health plan + savings account HSA-qualified plan through insurance Preventive services covered at 100% Office visits, prescriptions, deductible, copays and coinsurance ALL count toward your deductible and out-of-pocket maximum HSA through HealthEquity Tax-free1 savings for qualified medical expenses Works together with the HSA-qualified plan There are actually two parts to an HSA – a special type of health plan paired with a tax-advantaged savings account. 1. HSAs are never taxed at a federal income tax level when used appropriately for qualified medical expenses. Also, most states recognize HSA funds as tax-free with very few exceptions. Please consult a tax advisor regarding your state's specific rules.

The old way vs. the new strategy Lower monthly premium Higher deductible Higher monthly premium Lower deductible Money into HSA Speaker Notes: Money into the savings account is Tax Free

Qualified medical expenses: Visit HealthEquity.com/QME How an HSA works You HSA Qualified medical expenses Qualified medical expenses: Exams, prescriptions, procedures, vision, dental and more Visit HealthEquity.com/QME Speaker Notes After age 65 the HSA can be used for non-medical expenses with no additional penalties similar to an IRA or 401k. For illustrative purposes only. Visit the IRS website for a complete list of qualified medical expenses.

Put money into your HSA Maximize your HSA contributions in 2019: Single-coverage: $3,500 (2018: $3,450) save up to $700 in taxes!1 Family-coverage: $7,000 (2018: $6,900) save up to $1,400 in taxes!1 Catch-up contribution, age 55+: $1,000 Put money into your HSA Speaker notes: - At the very least, members should make deposits into their HSA that match their medical expenses incurred so they can benefit from tax savings. 1. Estimated savings are based on an assumed combined federal and state income tax bracket of 20%. Actual saving will depend on your taxable income and tax status. HealthEquity does not provide tax advice.

How to add funds to your HSA Your employer provides: $XXX for single coverage $XXX for family coverage Pre-tax contributions through payroll Change your payroll deductions any time Make post-tax contributions online or by check You can make contributions until the tax deadline for the previous tax year At the very least... Fund your account before paying a qualified expense. It is the member’s responsibility to ensure eligibility requirements as well as if they are eligible for the plan and expenses submitted. One should consult a tax advisor as individual factors and situations vary.

Who is eligible to add funds to an HSA? To contribute to an HSA, the IRS requires that: You are covered ONLY by an HSA-qualified health plan Other health coverage may disqualify you (including Medicare, Tricare, or a traditional health plan) You do not have access to a full purpose FSA (even through a spouse) You aren’t claimed as a dependent on anyone’s tax return It is the member’s responsibility to ensure eligibility requirements as well as if they are eligible for the plan and expenses submitted. One should consult a tax advisor as individual factors and situations vary. See IRS Publication 969 for more details.

Healthcare costs in retirement *The average American couple will need $265,000 to have a 90 percent chance of having enough money to cover out-of-pocket health care costs in retirement. Cover the Medicare gap Qualified medical expenses not covered by Medicare can always be paid from your HSA tax-free.1 Prescriptions Medical Dental Vision Hearing expenses Copays Premiums 1. HSAs are never taxed at a federal income tax level when used appropriately for qualified medical expenses. Also, most states recognize HSA funds as tax-free with very few exceptions.
