Full stops are used at the end of a sentence usually a statement. Full stops show that the sentence has a complete thought that has ended. Full stops are also used in abbreviations eg as soon as possible = A.S.A.P. Full stops are used in abbreviating people’s names (known as salutation) eg Dr. Smith Full stops .

Exclamation marks are used at the end of a sentence to show emotion. Exclamation marks are used to show commands. Exclamation Marks !

Question marks are used at the end of a sentence to show a question has been asked. ?

Capital letters are used at the beginning of a sentence. Capital letters are used for all proper nouns including people’s names, places, streets, titles etc. Capitals letters are used for names of months and days. Capital letters are used when abbreviating eg ASAP = as soon as possible. Capital letters can also be used to make IMPACT when writing. Capital Letters H

Speech marks are used when characters in a story are speaking. Speech marks are put around what has been said. Speech marks are placed at the beginning and at the end of what each person says. Usually speech begins on a new line. Speech Marks “ ”
