Navigation: Gabcikovo Dam The Gabcikovo Dam Project was started in 1977 under the auspice of a international treaty between Hungary and the former Czechoslovakia. The goal was to dam the Danube, all the way from Bratislava to Budapest, to provide hydro-electric energy. In 1989, Hungary suspended work citing ecological concerns. In 1993 the International Court of Justice was called in to arbitrate. The Gabcikovo dam system has been operating since the end of October The construction directly affected 3,900 hectares of fields and 3,400 ha of floodplain forests in Slovakia and another 2,000 ha in Hungary at the site of the original reservoir and Dunakiliti diversion weir - built before Hungary withdrew from the project. The canal diverts 80-90% of the Danube river water into the reservoir. The remaining % of the water is allowed to pass through the Cunovo diversion weir and directly into the old river bed.

Closed Reading: The Danube River Read the article and answer the questions 1.Locate the area of the Gabcikovo-Nagymaros Project on the map of the Danube river. 2.Which countries are upstream of the project? Which countries are downstream? 3.Where is the Danube River in relation to the country borders in the area? 4.Based on the borders, who should control the river? Why? 5.Why would countries downstream or upstream the dam care about the project?

Closed Reading: The Danube River Answers 1.The countries that are upstream of the Danube are: Germany and Austria. The countries that downstream are: Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, and Ukraine. 2.The Danube river is in the northeast region of the countries it borders. 3.According to the borders the countries that should control the river are: Germany, Austria, Hungary, Bosnia, and Bulgaria. The reason for this the Danube running trough them. 4.Countries upstream and downstream should have a say about the dam because they will either face a flood or a drought because of it. This will directly impact their revenue source.

Closed Reading: The Danube River Read the article and answer the questions (Highlight the following) Identify one benefit, or positive outcome, that might result from the project, and one drawback, or negative outcome. Find evidence of cooperation along the Danube and evidence of conflict. Tell how the people in the region have tried to settle this dispute.

Closed Reading: The Danube River Read the article and answer the questions Why would countries downstream from the dam care about the project? Countries upstream? Should they be allowed to help make decisions about the dams? In building the Cunovo dam and diversion canal, more than 80 percent of the water from the Danube River was moved out of its original course. How would this affect the people living along the original course of the river? How might it cause conflict?
