Where Are The Dead? Lk. 16:19-31

The Living Hades

I. Where are the dead?

Are they in the grave? No Js. 2:26 [26] For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also

Are they in heaven or hell? Acts 2:34 [34] For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand

2 Pet. 2:9 [9] The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished

Are they somewhere in between? Yes Lk. 23:43 [43] And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise

Jn. 20:17 [17] Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.

They are in a place called “Hades” Hades refers to the place where departed spirits are kept until the resurrection and judgment

Intermediate State The Living Hades Eternal

II. The rich man and Lazarus

Lazarus, the poor beggar Lk. 16:20-21 [20] And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, [21] And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.

Lazarus & the rich man die - their roles are reversed Lk. 16:22-25 [22] And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; [23] And in hell (hades) he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

[24] And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. [25] But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

Abraham told the rich man he was beyond help Lk. 16:26 [26] And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence

Hades

The rich man wanted someone to warn his family Lk. 16:27-28 [27] Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: [28] For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment

He was told that this could not happen Lk. 16:29-31 [29] Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. [30] And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. [31] And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead

III. Lessons to be learned from the rich man & Lazarus

A. Hades & Hell (Gehenna) are not to be confused Hades – a place for departed spirits, both good and bad, before the resurrection Mt. 16:18 18 And I also say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it (ASV)

Acts 2:27, 31(ASV) [27] Because thou wilt not leave my soul unto Hades, Neither wilt thou give thy Holy One to see corruption [31] he foreseeing this spake of the resurrection of the Christ, that neither was he left unto Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption

Hell (Gehenna) – place where the wicked are for eternity Mt. 10:28 [28] And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell

1 Hades 2

Mt. 5:22 [22] But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire

B. Hades has 2 parts A Place for the righteous Lk. 23:43 [43] And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise

A Place for the unrighteous 2 Pet. 2:4 [4] For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment

Hades 1 2

C. There is no 2nd chance after death Lk. 16:26 [26] And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence

Hades

D. There is consciousness after death Lk. 16:22-23 [22] And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; [23] And in hell (hades) he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom

E. There is recognition after death Lk. 16:23-24 [23] And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom [24] And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame

F. There is remembrance after death Lk. 16:27-28 [27] Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: [28] For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment

G. There is no contact with the living after death Lk. 16:27-31 [27] Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: [28] For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. [29] Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.

[30] And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. [31] And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead
