In-Text Citations Worksheet: 1.) Use part of the sentence in a passage with citation. _____________ “_________” (Smith 222). College is much different than high school because “the possibilities are endless” (Smith 222). Many students are sheltered and “really have no idea what opportunities exist in the big wide world” (Smith 222). “Expect to find a wider variety of options available” when entering a college’s campus (Smith 222).

In-Text Citations Worksheet: 2.) Introduce author, use a quotation and cite the source. _______ Yokum“__________” (33). According to Yokum “most workplaces don’t have that many parties” (33). Abner Yokum tells the truth in saying many students are “sadly disappointed when it comes time for them to actually begin a career” (35). It’s sad when people pick a college based on parties. Yokum reports “students who select colleges because of the potential for partying are often sadly disappointed” (34).

In-Text Citations Worksheet: 3.) Include two sections from this passage in one sentence ; be sure to cite. __________ “______...______” (Crist and Meyer 62) “Life, like any paper topic, neatly divides itself into three major categories” “Life … neatly divides itself into three major categories” (Crist and Meyer 62).

In-Text Citations Worksheet: 4.) Use quote and cite (two authors). _______________ “____” (Collins and Almond 19). Many struggle with selecting a major, but undergrads interested in law should study English because “logic and analysis transfer well to disputation” (Collins and Almond 19). “_______” ________ (Collins and Almond 19). “English is actually one of the best majors to consider as an undergraduate” if a student wants to become a lawyer (Collins and Almond 19).

Perdue’s MLA OWL Tips: Let’s take a look at the presentation created by the Online Writing Lab at Perdue University. Uploaded separately.

The Writing Process: Please list the six steps of the writing process. If you are unsure, please make an educated guess. Prewriting Research Drafting Outline / Write Responding Find a friend Revising Make it better Proofreading Make it correct Publishing Share the finished product

Prewriting: How do you pre-write? What works best? Examples of graphic organizers and other prewriting methods?

Research Specific Organizers: When writing a research paper, things must be organized with detail. Many outlines in RJ2 were too short. As a general rule, each page of an outline will equal about one page of writing. You should have a 3-5 page outline.

1) Prewriting = Research: Not ALL ideas do not come from your brain, as they do in creative writing. Your opinion and thoughts are supported by research in this style of writing.

2) Outlining/Drafting: Your research journals assist with drafting. Your outline leads to a rough draft. Many need to add to their outline.

Outline Examples: “A Study on Factors Affecting the Infant Feeding Practices of Mothers in Las Pinas City” MLA Outline Example Distributed: 15 February These examples are not double spaced, so they appear to be shorter.

Our Research Process: Jorden Carlsen: Masculinity Makes a Good Man Distributed: 9 January Re-read how this college student planned and organized his paper with the writing process.

A Former Student’s Message: Why do you need to know how to research and write papers? The following is a conversation between Mr. Short and his former student who graduated from Whitesboro High School in 2012.

The purpose of research journals, papers & presentations is to prepare you for college.

Work: The more you do and understand now, the easier college will be.
