Objectives At the end of this session, you will be able to: Log on to Power school Search for a student and groups of students Use Stored Searches and Stored Selections Use the Counselor's Screen Complete Log Entry Have a general understanding of other student screens and Alerts Know at least 2 places to go to for Help

The Power School Website http://powerschool.avongrove.org/admin/pw.html It is web based – It can be accessed it from any computer with internet connection

Overview of Student Searches

How to search/browse students Using the Browse Option – Click on one of the links to execute specific, single-criteria searches. You can search by First letter of Last Name Grade level Gender Current Enrollment Current Selection

Search for… …all students in the __ grade …all the male students … all the students whose last name begins with the letter ____ Re-select the current selection …all enrolled

Field/Value Searching Suppose you would like to find all of the students in your school whose first name is Tim.

Field/Value Searching Every search command line is broken into three parts: field name - such as first_name or grade_level or DOB comparator - such as = search argument - in the example, tim is the search argument – what I want to find The general format is: [field name] [comparator] [search argument]

Field/Value Searching Suppose you would like to find all of the students in your school whose first name is Tim. Type the following into the search box: first_name=timothy [field name] [comparator] [search argument]

Field/Value Searching Using the Search option (field/value) PowerSchool stores student information in fields. For example: "first_name" field stores the students' first names. The "DOB" filed stores the students' date-of-birth.

Wild Card Searching “@” Search for a student whose first name starts with Jen first_name = jen@ Note: For SASI users the “@” replaces the SASI”*”

Searching Using OR (in waves) Search for all the students whose last names begins with “h” or “j” or “k” Iep or ell???? 1st wave – Last_name = h@ search 2nd wave - +Last_name = j@ search 3rd wave - +Last_name = k@ search

Searching Using OR (in waves) Search for all the students who have an IEP or are in the ELL program 1st wave – pa_iep=1 2nd wave – +agsd_ell_engprof>=1;agsd_ell_engprof<=5

Searching Using AND “;” AGI - Search for all the girls in the 6th grade PLE - Search for all the boys in the 2nd grade grade_level = 6;gender = f grade_level = 2;gender = m

How to Search by Birthday To find a student or students that have a birthday on a specified date, use the *birthday search code. This code is always preceded with an asterisk. Birthdays (today) *birthday=today Finds all students whose birthday is today, matching only month and day. Birthdays (date) *birthday=5/1 Find all students whose birthday is May 1 Birthdays (range) *birthday>=5/1/99;*birthday<=5/31/99 Find all birthdays in May of 1999

¨ Displaying Inactive students – “/” Include non-active students. Use this “/” prefix to search across ALL students (ie, active and inactive). Example /Last_Name=Smith

Stored Searches

How to Store Frequently Used Search Commands You can store frequently-used searches instead of entering the same search command every time that you need to work with a particular group of students. After a search is stored, all other users on the same PowerSchool server can use all the stored searches listed on the stored search page.

Stored Searches From the Start Page, click on Stored Searches Click New.

Stored Selections Create your selection Return to the Start page Check to see if you have your selections Click on the sorted selection link 248 students selected

The Counselor’s Screen Choose the student screen you would like to use. Then click Submit

The Counselor’s Screen Clicking the First Name takes you out of the counselors screen to the individual students page. Clicking the Last Name keeps you in the counselors screen to move between students. You view the student screen selected at the beginning

The Counselor’s Screen If you leave the Counselors Screen you can still look at the other students by using the arrows

The Counselor’s Screen Short Cut to another student(s) not in the Current Selection Note: Will lose your current selection

Log Entries

Log Entries On the student’s screen Select Log Entries under the Administration section of the side bar

Log Entries To create a new log entry Click on New To view a current Log Click the date

Log Entries The date, time & Author will be filled in Log Type – Select Counselor

Log Entries Under Subtype – We need your help! Send Linda a list of subtypes you would like.

Log Entries Most of the remaining log is for Discipline Activity Pick a student Enter a Log Delete it
