FAMILY STRUCTURES

Family A group of people related by blood, marriage, law or choice, committed over time, share responsibility, activities, goals and values.

Foldable ●Fold your paper like a hamburger and then into thirds to create six sections when opened (see image below). ●Write the heading and description of each family structure into the appropriate section

1. NUCLEAR Two parents and their children Examples : “The Middle” “The Simpsons” “The Goldbergs”

2. Single Parent One parent (mother or father) raising a dependent child or children without a partner. Examples : ”Beauty and the Beast” “Gilmore Girls” “Full House”

3. Step/Blended One or both parents bringing their child/children from the previous relationship into the family. They may have children together. Examples : “ Modern Family” “Cinderella” “The Brady Bunch”

4. Multi-Generational /Extended 2 or 3 generations living under one roof Examples : ” The Addams Family” “Full House”

5. Adoptive Parent/s who have legal and complete custody of children who are not biologically theirs. Examples : “ Modern Family” “Annie” “Grey’s Anatomy”

6. Foster Parent(s) taking care of children who are not biologically theirs (usually temporary). Examples : “The Fosters” “This Is Us”

What Kind of Family Am I? 1. Has only one parent to fulfill many responsibilities and roles of parenting. 2. Includes stepchildren or half brothers and sisters. 3. Has grandparents living with the family. 4. Includes children who may have been born to other birth parents.
