Mobile A/C Service Training Technician Certification for Service and Containment of Refrigerants Used in Mobile A/C Systems (R744, HFC-152a and HFO-1234yf)

SAE ICCC Leadership Vast amount of work required to prepare a path for numerous candidate refrigerants to replace HFC-134a

Not Business-as-Usual Some of the practices, techniques and procedures, as well as the information, tools and equipment which have been commonly used in mobile air conditioning system diagnosis and service will be different for mobile air conditioning systems using R744, HFC-152a and HFO-1234yf. Modifications and adjustments will have to be made based on the individual characteristics of each refrigerant.

SAE J2845 Technician training and certification is required to ensure safe, efficient and effective service and repair of mobile air conditioning systems using R744, HFC-152a and HFO-1234yf. The technician must be trained to recognize which refrigerant is being handled, be trained to handle it safely and be equipped with the essential information, proper equipment and tools, which may be unique to a single refrigerant.

Training Must Address… Identification of unique fittings and labels for each refrigerant How to use refrigerant identification equipment to identify each refrigerant How to use electronic leak detection equipment and fluorescent dyes to identify leaks with each refrigerant

Training Must Address… How to contain and limit use of each refrigerant to vehicle requirements, to promote technician safety and minimize environmental impact using the appropriate recovery, recycling and charging equipment System servicing procedures General and specific safety practices for each refrigerant

Electronic Leak Detection and Use of Fluorescent Dyes Current leak detection technology should work with HFO-1234yf

Service Equipment Peter Coll, Neutronics (Identification) Gary Murray, Robinair (Recovery/Recycling)

System Servicing Procedures Service technicians will need to know the service procedures specific to the refrigerant

General and Specific Safety Practices Training must address the unique characteristics of each refrigerant, and incorporate information to promote safe practices in the work environment.
