How do waterfalls form Objectives; 1.To recognise how and where waterfalls form. 2.To explain how geology is important in the formation of waterfalls

Waterfalls are formed in the upper reaches of a river, can you think back to the stages in their formation? Why do waterfalls form in the upper course of a river? Can you identify any of these waterfalls and where they are found?

How a waterfall forms http://www.curriculumbits.com/prodimages/details/geography/geo0002.html What type of erosion are Involved with the formation of a plunge pool?

Gorge formation

The Formation of a Waterfall Water passes over hard rock and erodes the softer rock below A plunge pool is formed and the river erodes backward as the water and rock swirl around Eventually the hard cap rock overhangs and collapses under gravity This process continues over time and the waterfall moves backwards or recedes to form a gorge

Your task; Order the stages of the waterfall formation Then under each stage write an explanation to describe what is happening at each stage- use your glossary to help you.

Plenary; Add your diagram to the upper stages of the river Severn.
