What different plants did you see? How were they different? What did they all have in common? They are green and they all use energy from the sun to make their own food from water and a gas in the air called carbon dioxide.

Discuss how you think the plant kingdom could be divided into smaller groups Share your ideas with the rest of the class Scientists have decided to group the plant kingdom into 4 groups

The first group are green plants that have no roots or flowers The main plants in this group are mosses

The second group of green plants also have no flowers, they make spores instead of seeds which will grow into new plants Ferns are in this group These brown dots underneath the fern are full of tiny spores

The third group of plants make cones to hold their seeds The third group of plants make cones to hold their seeds. They usually have needles instead of leaves. Conifers are an example of this group.

All plants that have flowers The fourth and final group in the plant kingdom are flowering plants. This group has over a quarter of a million different kinds including: All trees that aren’t conifers Grasses – these have small flowers All plants that have flowers All plants that make fruits and vegetables

Your task today is to make the next page in your interactive book on living things. It will be an amazing pop-up tree and garden with some exciting plant facts to fascinate your readers!

How to make a popup tree 1. Cut out your tree and fold it in half down the middle of the trunk. Also fold up the two small tabs at the bottom 2. Draw some tapering branches coming from the top of the trunk

3. Colour in your tree. It looks good if you use different shades of brown and green to look like bark and clumps of leaves. Leave the two little tabs at the bottom unshaded.

4. Next cut out your row of bushes and plants 4. Next cut out your row of bushes and plants. Fold it in half (see dotted line) and fold up the two tabs at the bottom. Colour in the bushes to look like flowers and vegetables in a garden. Use brown to fill in the spaces around them. Once you have coloured in your tree and bushes, your teacher will show you how to stick them onto your piece of folded card so that they pop up.
