BOP FLUID MAINTENANCE SIMON McMANUS WM CANNING LTD. TRAINING SEMINAR BOP FLUID MAINTENANCE SIMON McMANUS WM CANNING LTD.

Low Dilution Corrosion due to no inhibition. System wear due to no lubrication. Increased contamination due to increased wear. Bacterial growth as the fluid is biodegradable when diluted. High pressures required to operate valves Slow system response.

Poor water used for mixing Bacterial contamination (even with drinking water) Introduction of other chemicals used in water treatment can cause reactions with the fluid. Main affect normally on corrosion inhibitors.

Oil & Grease Contamination Blocked filters Micro-Biological Contamination. Live in the Oil Feed from the fluid Fluid Bacteria Oil

Addition of Antifreeze Only Erifon Stack Glycol or pure Mono-Ethylene-Glycol (MEG) should be used Use of standard antifreeze may have a detrimental effect on the fluid.

Contamination with Other BOP Fluids Oil based fluids are not compatible in any proportions. All Erifon products are compatible with one another. Erifon fluids are compatible with Stackmagic and UK50 but we would recommend speaking to Wm Canning before mixing any others. We don’t advise mixing concentrates.

Oceanic ACL Grease Grease based on MEG Fully compatible with water-based hydraulic fluids. Is soluble and will be washed away eventually, to become part of the fluid. Ideal for equipment installation and storage.

Fluorescene Dye Can be added to the fluid to aid the detection of leaks Added at 200-400ppm Can be left in the system after addition Enhanced leak detection with the aid of a UV (Black) light.

Oceanic LTF Oil based leak tracing fluid. Used at 5% in existing BOP fluid. Forms an intense white plume when mixed with seawater. No special lighting required. It is recommended to flush the system after use (See oil contamination).

Erifon Stack Glycol Compatible with Erifon Products MEG with Corrosion Inhibitors.

Erifon Systems Cleaner De-greaser Sterilisation Used to remove oil and grease from a system and kill fungus and bacteria. Covered in a later section.

Erifon Pilot Line Fluid Ready to use. Made with pure water. Correct quantity of Corrosion inhibitor, Lubricant and Biocide. Correct Glycol content for use at -25°C. To fit into new system designs by Shafer and Cameron.

Dilution Test Kit Fill titration tube to 5ml line with diluted test fluid Add indicator tablet Fill syringe with Titrator Reagent B Add Reagent B drop by drop until a pink coloration appears

Dilution Test Kit Read the amount of Reagent B used to neutralise the fluid using the scale on the syringe Locate this value on the Y axis of the dilution graph, read the corresponding X axis value to give the % dilution

Erifon HD603

Bacteriological Test Kit Take an unused dipslide, unscrew cap and dip into sample or pour sample over both sides of the slide Shake off excess and replace cap Incubate for 48 hours at 25- 30°C Compare density of colonies to comparison chart

Bacteriological Test Kit

Refractometer Calibrate the Refractometer by placing water on the prism, close the cover plate, ensuring there are no air bubbles in the trapped film of sample Observe the Refractometer reading in the eyepiece. Adjust to zero using the adjustment screw

Refractometer Dry the prism and cover plate Carefully apply a drop of sample to the prism and replace the cover plate Observe the Refractometer reading in the eyepiece by measuring where the lower blue and upper white segments meet on the % BRIX scale in the centre of the view. Use this reading to calculate dilution or glycol content

Refractometer Multiply the Brix reading by 1.5 to obtain a glycol content reading. Subtract the value of the Erifon concentrate. This gives you the MEG content
