Hickory High School operates Block Scheduling Hickory High School operates on a 4 x 4 block schedule. Semester 1 September – January Semester 2 February – June

TERMS TO KNOW Credit – earned by passing a class Verified Credit – earned by passing a class AND passing the SOL test for that class Grade Point Average (GPA) – a cumulative average of ALL your high school course grades (includes high school courses taken in middle school) Profile of Graduate – Proposed graduation requirements that focus on preparing students to be successful in the evolving global economy, whether entering the world of work or going to postsecondary education.

Transcripts A transcript is a record of only the FINAL grades a student receives throughout their high school years. Grades are posted on the transcripts at the end of each semester, not at the end of each grading period. Who will see the transcript? teachers, counselors, administrators, student and parent/guardian. Students can set up a Parchment account to access and send transcripts electronically to themselves or to colleges.

Additional Requirements The following additional requirements for graduation have been added: All students must complete an Academic Career Plan. All students will be able to demonstrate foundational skills in critical thinking, creative thinking, collaboration, communication, and citizenship. All students are required to complete one virtual course before graduation. At this time that requirement can be met through Economics and Personal Finance. All students must complete First Aid, CPR, AED Training, which is completed in the 9th grade Health/PE class For the Standard Diploma, students must also successfully pass one industry credential. These certifications and licensure exams accompany specific CTE courses.

HB 1184 – passed by 2012 General Assembly An agreement for postsecondary degree attainment with a community college in the Commonwealth Students complete a transfer degree or a one-year Uniform Certificate of General Studies Concurrent with a high school diploma Available using dual enrollment courses and Advanced Placement courses with qualifying exam scores of three or higher.

College and Career Pathways HB 1184 Things to keep in mind In order to be able to meet the requirements for the social science transfer degree, students should already have credits from the middle school When students take the AP courses for the pathways, they must make qualifying scores, a minimum of a 3, on the AP exams to earn the college credits. The credits earned are with TCC, and they may not transfer to a 4-year college. To meet the requirements for the pathways, students may have to limit which Advanced Placement classes they want to take. To meet the requirements for the pathways, students may not be able to play sports or participate in activities in the junior and/or senior years.

Grades are Important All grades are part of a student’s GPA (Grade Point Average) and class rank Each semester has four 4.5 week marking periods (report cards go out every 4.5 weeks vs Middle School every 9 weeks) Each marking period and the final exam are 20% of the student’s final grade Athletic and VHSL participation requires a 2.0 GPA (C average or better is needed to play sports) Note: If you wish to have a grade removed from your transcript in Middle School, i.e. Foreign Language or Algebra 1 and Geometry, you MUST complete the “Audit Status” form. See your middle school counselor for details.

How is my final grade determined??? Each semester has 4 quarters and an exam: 1st quarter = 20% 2nd quarter = 20% 3rd quarter = 20% 4th quarter = 20% Exam grade= 20% Average of all 5 grades = Final Grade

Criteria for Accelerated and Honors Courses THESE COURSES ARE DESIGNED FOR STUDENTS WHO MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA: Have consistently received grades of “B” or better in that subject area in the past Have demonstrated reading and writing proficiency at or above grade level. Have the recommendation of their present teacher in the appropriate subject Have the approval of your parents NOTE: .025 will be added to G.P.A. for Honors Classes .05 will be added to G.P.A. for AP Classes

Scheduling Guidelines All students MUST take eight (8) courses. Students may take only one core English, Social Studies, or Physical Education course during the Freshman year. Students may take more than one Math, Science, or Elective Course keeping within the course sequence. Music students must NOT take Physical Education in Summer School. Music will alternate with P.E. 9 in the modified block (A/B Day).

Scheduling Guidelines Cont’d Study Hall with tutoring is available after school Tuesday through Thursday; Bus transportation is available. The maximum number of absences is nine (9) in a block class. Students can make up 4 missed days per course by utilizing the Extended Day program after school.
