Directions: Decide whether the prompt is asking for narrative, argumentative, or informational/explanatory writing. Raise the appropriate card!

Explain how the author develops the theme that home is a joyful and safe place. Use details from the text to support your answer.

Which author MOST successfully develops the topic of the prevention of animal cruelty according to his/her purpose using valid reasoning and relevant evidence? Use details from BOTH articles to support your answer.

The following passage is the opening to a short story entitled “Summer” by David Updike. Using information from the text, write an opening to a short story entitled “Winter.” Consider how the mood might change based on the setting. Be sure your introduction establishes the story’s setting, point of view, and primary conflict.

In the first paragraph, the author claims that there is a long tradition of dragon myths in China and that they are “revered throughout Asia to this day.” How does the author develop this claim?

Write an essay in your own words explaining some ways in which libraries are adapting and changing in the 21st century.

The author describes many ways that dragons have been significant to different cultures throughout history. Using information from the text, write an introduction to a short story that will feature a dragon or dragons.

In the last paragraph, the author states that Sojourner Truth “accomplished amazing things.” How does the author develop this claim? Use details from the passage to support your answer.

Currently, there is an ongoing debate about the use of technology such as smartphones in the classroom. Some schools do not allow smartphones in class, while others allow them and even encourage their use. Weigh the claims on both sides, and then write an essay in your own words, supporting one side of the debate in which you argue EITHER that smartphones should be allowed in the classroom OR that schools should be smartphone-free. Be sure to use information from BOTH passages.

This passage was written using third-person point of view This passage was written using third-person point of view. How would the excerpt be different if Jean Valjean were narrating? Rewrite the beginning of the passage from Jean Valjean’s perspective.

Ethos, pathos, or logos? 1. “This year’s space budget is three times what it was in January 1961, and it is greater than the space budget of the previous eight years combined. That budget now stands at $5,400 million a year–a staggering sum, though somewhat less than we pay for cigarettes and cigars every year. Space expenditures will soon rise some more, from 40 cents per person per week to more than 50 cents a week for every man, woman and child in the United Stated, for we have given this program a high national priority…” 2. “I am a child of the House of Commons. I was brought up in my father's house to believe in democracy. ‘Trust the people.’ That was his message.” 3. “It’s the hope of slaves sitting around a fire singing freedom songs; the hope of immigrants setting out for distant shores; the hope of a young naval lieutenant bravely patrolling the Mekong Delta; the hope of a millworker’s son who dares to defy the odds; the hope of a skinny kid with a funny name who believes that America has a place for him, too.”

Good luck! You are all going to shine tomorrow!
