Gorokan Public School Energy Saving Plan Put your school logo here March 2010 These Stage 3 students conducted an energy use audit.

In the last 13 months our schools electricity use produced 227 tonnes of Greenhouse Gas (or 0.4 tonnes for each person at the school) and cost $44,800 (at $0.18 per kWHr) We analysed the energy bills that we have received over the past 13 months.

This graph shows average daily usage over the past 13 months. February, March and November have the highest energy use due to the use of air conditioners during the warmer weather. The month of January shows an average daily use of 390kWh, which raises the question of what is the source of this energy use considering that the school is empty during this month due to school holidays.

This graph shows the amount of electricity that the schools appliances use per hour. The graph highlights that energy saving recommendations need to focus on the use of air conditioners, internal lights, hot water services and computers.

Energy Survey Results Thermal Energy Air conditioners = 16 Fans =77 Electronic hot water system =7 Fan heaters =1 Light Energy Internal lights = 697 External lights = 48 Computers and Appliances Computers = 64 Projectors = 4 Scanners = 1 DVD players = 10 Printers = 14 Photocopiers = 3 Fax machines = 2 Televisions = 6 Freezers = 2 Vacuum cleaners = 4 Refrigerators = 8 Video recorders = 2 Microwaves = 4 Whiteboards = 22

Set air con thermostats to the lowest comfortable temperature in winter and the highest in summer and dress for the season. A one degree change can reduce greenhouse emissions by 20% Insulate ceilings and walls where possible Encourage student energy monitors to check that lights are not left on unnecessarily. Clean fluorescent tubes and covers and remove tubes in situations where there is excessive lighting Replace incandescent globes with compact fluorescent lamps Replace older style 40 watt fluorescent tubes (40mm diameter) with thinner (26mm) 36 watt tubes Install movement sensors and lighting controls to avoid leaving lights on continually Activate Energy Saving features on appliances such as computers, photocopiers, printers. Instant Boiling Water Units are big energy users. Install timers to ensure they are turned off at the end of the day and during holiday periods. Energy Saving Ideas

Our Energy Action Plan Problems In some rooms there are more lights on than needed. Heaters are left on longer than required. Computers are left on all day. Air conditioners are left on all day and sometimes while doors and windows are open. Energy is being consumed during the school holidays from fridges and hot water services being left on. Solutions Turn the lights/fans off when the room is empty. Keep a thermometer in the room to monitor temperature. Turn off heaters at a designated temperature – eg when everyone is comfortable with a jumper on (not so hot that everyone has to be in short sleeves). Only turn computers on when they are needed. Always turn the monitor off. Educate the school community about the efficient use of air conditioners. Turn off fridges, hot water services and the water heater (staff room) during school holidays.

Our ANNUAL Target: At Gorokan Public School we will aim to reduce the use of energy consumption by: Using air conditioners more efficiently. Turning lights off when a room is not in use. Turning hot water systems off during school holiday periods and installing a timer on the kitchen water heater. Only turning computers on when in use and always turning monitors off when not in use. Educating the students, staff and school community about more efficient energy use.
