Standardization of power electronic systems and equipment IEC 61204-7 Low-voltage switch mode power supplies – Part 7: Safety requirements Update November 2017 Clemens Klemm Siemens AG European Power Supplies Manufacturers’ Association www.epsma.org

Classical industries and power conversion Drive trains for mobility Factory automation Converter =  UPS and power distribution Power supply

New industries and power conversion Photovoltaik Wind power Energy storage Converter charging/discharging =  Tidal wave Electric drive train

Same challenges for classic and new industries The applications are very different, but often the technology is almost similar! The safety standards should be aligned as much as possible! Standards on interconnection and performance are necessary! Standards should be easy to use

Switched-Mode Power Supplies Group Safety Publication Standards hierarchy related to IEC 62477-1 std. IEC 62477-1 (group safety standard) IEC 62477-1: Safety requirements for power electronic converter systems and equipment - Part 1: General Developed to provide requirement for the whole power electronic industry (e.g. power supplies, UPS, drive systems). Designed as standard to be used on its own, or to be referenced by other committees. Status of a ”Group Safety Function” by ACOS (Advisory Committee on Safety within the IEC) in the low voltage area; extract from the scope: This part of IEC 62477 has the status of a group safety publication in accordance with IEC Guide 104 for power electronic converter systems and equipment for solar, wind, tidal, wave, fuel cell or similar energy sources.

IEC 62477-1 platform for power electronics Applications aligning with IEC 62477-1: IEC 61204-7: Low-voltage switch mode power supplies – Part 7: Safety requirements IEC 61800-5-1: Adjustable speed electrical power drive systems - Part 5-1: Safety requirements - Electrical, thermal and energy. IEC 62040-1: Uninterruptible power systems (UPS) - Part 1: General and Safety requirements. IEC 62040-5-1: Uninterruptible power systems (UPS) - Part 5-1: DC output UPS - Safety requirements

IEC 62477-1 platform for other industries (1) TC82 Solar photovoltaic energy systems: IEC 62109-1: Safety of power converters for use in photovoltaic power systems – part 1: general requirements. IEC 62109-2: Safety of power converters for use in photovoltaic power systems - part 2: Particular requirements for inverters. TC88 Wind turbines: IEC 61400-1: Wind turbines - Part 1: Design requirements. IEC 61400-2: Wind turbines - Part 2: Design requirements for small wind turbines.

IEC 62477-1 platform for other industries (2) TC105 Fuel cell technologies: IEC 62282-2: Fuel cell technologies - Part 2: Fuel cell modules IEC 62282-3-1: Fuel cell technologies - Part 3-1: Stationary fuel cell power systems – Safety IEC 62282-5-1: Fuel cell technologies - Part 5-1: Portable fuel cell power systems – Safety IEC 62282-6-1: Micro fuel cell power systems – part 6-1 - Safety

IEC 61204-7 and references References exist in the following standards: IEC 60204-1 Chapter 9.1.1 Control circuit supply „As an alternative, low voltage power supplies with an DC output up to 60Vdc in accordance with IEC 61204-7 may be used.” IEC 62368-1: Chapter G 5.3.1 „IEC 61204-7 for a transformer used in a low-voltage power supply;” References are planned in next revision in: IEC 61010-series (Measurement and Control) IEC 60601-1 (Medical products) Further references are supposable

IEC 61204-7 and IEC 62477-1 (group safty standard) in the IEC Harmonization in Europe EN 61204-7 has been positively assessed by the LVD (Low Voltage Directive) New Approach consultant in September 2017. Acceptance in China (GB standard) They voted positive on the standard. National Chinese Mirror Comittee (TC 60) will investigate for national acceptance of IEC 61204-7 and group safety publication IEC 62477-1. Acceptance in US/CAN Mainly depending of the US/CAN acceptance of group safety standard IEC 62477-1 which is in progress. Technical demands from US will be considered in 2nd version of IEC 61477-1 which is actually in Draft status.

A new IEC product: Extended version - easy to use

The first IEC 62477-1 referencing standard, the IEC 61204-7, 2nd edition Text of IEC 61204-7, 2nd Text of IEC 62477-1:2012 SMPS
