Standardization of power electronic systems and equipment IEC 61204-7 Low-voltage switch mode power supplies – Part 7: Safety requirements Update November 2017 Clemens Klemm Siemens AG European Power Supplies Manufacturers’ Association www.epsma.org
Classical industries and power conversion Drive trains for mobility Factory automation Converter = UPS and power distribution Power supply
New industries and power conversion Photovoltaik Wind power Energy storage Converter charging/discharging = Tidal wave Electric drive train
Same challenges for classic and new industries The applications are very different, but often the technology is almost similar! The safety standards should be aligned as much as possible! Standards on interconnection and performance are necessary! Standards should be easy to use

IEC 61204-7 and references References exist in the following standards: IEC 60204-1 Chapter 9.1.1 Control circuit supply „As an alternative, low voltage power supplies with an DC output up to 60Vdc in accordance with IEC 61204-7 may be used.” IEC 62368-1: Chapter G 5.3.1 „IEC 61204-7 for a transformer used in a low-voltage power supply;” References are planned in next revision in: IEC 61010-series (Measurement and Control) IEC 60601-1 (Medical products) Further references are supposable
IEC 61204-7 and IEC 62477-1 (group safty standard) in the IEC Harmonization in Europe EN 61204-7 has been positively assessed by the LVD (Low Voltage Directive) New Approach consultant in September 2017. Acceptance in China (GB standard) They voted positive on the standard. National Chinese Mirror Comittee (TC 60) will investigate for national acceptance of IEC 61204-7 and group safety publication IEC 62477-1. Acceptance in US/CAN Mainly depending of the US/CAN acceptance of group safety standard IEC 62477-1 which is in progress. Technical demands from US will be considered in 2nd version of IEC 61477-1 which is actually in Draft status.
