Art Deco art Deco or art deco - An art movement involving a mix of modern decorative art styles, largely of the 1920s and 1930s, whose main characteristics were derived from various avant-garde painting styles of the early twentieth century. Art deco works exhibit aspects of Cubism, Russian Constructivism and Italian Futurism — with abstraction, distortion, and simplification, particularly geometric shapes and highly intense colors — celebrating the rise of commerce, technology, and speed. The growing impact of the machine can be seen in repeating and overlapping images from 1925; and in the 1930s, in streamlined forms derived from the principles of aerodynamics. The name came from the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs Industriels et Modernes, held in Paris, which celebrated living in the modern world. It was popularly considered to be an elegant style of cool sophistication in architecture and applied arts which range from luxurious objects made from exotic material to mass produced, streamlined items available to a growing middle class.

The Chrysler Building is 1,046 feet tall. It has 77 floors. It’s on the east side of Manhattan on 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue. It was overtaken by the Empire State Building as the tallest building in the world in 1931. They started building it on September 19, 1928 and finished in 1930. The builders of New York were in a race to build the world's tallest skyscraper. The Chrysler building builders built 4 floors a week. Just before they finished, the building was tied with a building at 40 Wall Street. They added two feet to the building at 40 Wall Street, and said they won the title of the world's tallest building. But the Chrylser building’s architect, William Van Alen, had already secretly gotten permission to build a 185 foot spire, which was being built inside of the building. The spire was put on top of the building, making the Chrysler Building the world's tallest building. Then the Empire State Building was built the next year, and it was the tallest. The decoration on the tower looks like the front of Chrysler cars.
