Rain Water Harvesting and Irrigation Methods in use in Smallholder Farming Areas. What is the role of Department of Irrigation in facilitating scaling up? Soneni Eulodia Nyamangara Department of Irrigation
Presentation Outline Introduction Rainwater harvesting & irrigation Rainwater harvesting methods Irrigation Methods in use in the smallholder sector Government’s role Role of DOI in facilitating scaling up Conclusion
introduction A rainwater harvesting system consists of three basic elements: a collection area, a conveyance system, and storage facilities. Rainwater harvesting is much broader and includes roof catchments, storing water in ponds, tanks, reservoirs, small dams and in situ such as terraces. One of the benefits of rainwater harvesting is that you can irrigate and achieve household food security.
Rainwater harvesting Rainwater is harvested using various means, among them: Roof tops Rock outcrops Storm water drains Direct into a water reservoir From catchment into rivers & dams
rainwater harvesting from a rock ouctcrop: zvishavane
Small Dam
Meandering contours
Irrigation methods in use in smallholder farming areas Bucket Hose pipe Sprinkler (semi-portable system, drag-hose) Flood Drip (drip kits)
Water abstraction Manual pumping (eg treadle pump) Fuel (diesel, petrol) pumps Solar pumping Electricity
