Notes: The Periodic Table The periodic table is set up in order to predict properties of the elements and to place new elements easily. The table is organized by properties. What determines the chemical properties of an atom? Valence Electrons

Groups or Families: VERTICAL COLUMNS Same number of valence electrons Determines chemical properties. There are 18 groups.

Groups or Families: VERTICAL COLUMNS Group or Family # 18 - with exception of Helium, all elements has 8 valence electrons

Periods: ROWS Same number of energy levels Period # is same as # of energy levels. There are 7 periods.
