Origins of Psychology Draw a timeline as shown below and complete it as we go along. Include the year and what happened that year. 400B.C. 21st century https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xy0RWoFw5wk

Let’s Summarise Use your timeline Identify the origins of the approaches Use the classroom library to help you. Get students to each summarise from their notes orally what happened in the life of Psychology from 400 B.C to the present day.

Origins of Psychology 400 B.C Plato coined the term ‘Psyche’ to describe the mind and soul.

1879 What do you know happened in Psychological history in this year? Hint: Father of Psychology What did he do? He ensured psychological investigations were highly scientific by using Standardised instructions given to all participants. (Who are participants?), which allowed procedures to be replicated.

1886 Developed ‘Psychoanalysis’ Provided Psychotherapy in Austria Sigmund Freud Developed ‘Psychoanalysis’ Provided Psychotherapy in Austria Emphasised the importance of the unconscious mind.

1839 Charles Darwin Natural selection and the Theory of Evolution. Survival of the Fitest.

1913 Behaviourism is established by Watson and later by Skinner. Its popularity enables it to dominate Psychology for 50 years.

1954 Free will &self determination are seen as very important. This ‘third force’ in Psychology rejected behaviour & psychodynamic approach.

1963 Bandura proposes the Social Learning Theory which provides a link between the new cognitive approach and the traditional behavioural approach.

1980 onwards Biological approach begins to use brain and biological processes, to establish itself as the main scientific approach in Psychology.

Near the 21st Century Cognitive neuroscience links the ……………….. Approach and the …………………….approach.

Why study approaches? They provide a general view of what causes behaviour. Why do teenagers love taking selfies? Why do you like chocolate cake?

Make a Museum Exhibit Use the Library at the back of the classroom and the play dough to create A informative display card A museum artefact
