Cloud Storage Services Jahir Tamayo Intro: Introduce self and topic Promote upcoming PDs, CSs, and Socials Ask audience about current use of cloud storage or other types of storage. Brief overview about the different types of storage that existed/existed. ***Most of the PD will be done in browser using Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive***

Changes in storage Computer storage history: It would be portable but the main issue? If you lost it (disk, flash drive) then you are out of luck. If you cant find a compatible device (floppy drive, disk drive, usb) then it also cannot be used. Cloud storage allows for access nearly everywhere, allows for sharing and many more features that were not possible using older media. Some others are still viable options however (in certain cases) (flash drive: no internet, very quick if only one file needed. Email attachments: to send one file to another person, also quick.)

Why use cloud storage Cloud storage allow for access to files almost anywhere. Useful for group projects By sharing files and folders for other to view Allowing others to add files to shared folders without need to give out log in information. Allows you to keep a backup of your files. Introduction of what cloud storage does and how it can be used. Use examples of: Lesson planning Step 2, CI, MTS (Can collaborate to create a lesson plan.). Other classes that require several people. Sharing files (notes and such). Accessibility: possible to pull up a document quickly including notes on other devices either to study or to show some important document. Sharing documents: Two possible ways to do so. Using a link: typically no edit privileges but does allow for viewing of documents in the specified folder and other folders within. When given share option (invitations) then in some cases it is possible to allow for editing of the document and deletion and addition of files to the folder (again only on specified folders and folders inside that folder not on the entire thing.) Suggest that users be careful when sharing so that they do not accidentally give access to every file( security reasons as well as storage space reasons).

Popular Cloud storage services Dropbox Google drive Microsoft One Drive All are for the most part free with paid options. iCloud not included but also a possible cloud storage service that can be used, very good to use on iOS. This topic is not discussed because of little experience with apple products. In general they have similar functions. All of them allow the same general function of storage, sharing folders, and sharing links to folders. In addition to paid options (more storage, they also give more options to sharing). It is also possible to get more storage during random promotions (known in google and dropbox.)

Comparison of Services Dropbox Google Drive Microsoft One Drive Free Storage 2 GB 15 GB 5 GB Compatibility Android, iOS, Windows Android, iOS, Windows* Advantages Simple to access files, share options, opportunities for extra free storage Excellent for collaboration, can use google docs, more initial free storage Integration to windows, File editing possible using office online. Disadvantage Cannot edit files in browser, sharing dropbox folders can cause unwanted storage use. Google docs may not always be compatible (can affect format of files) Automatic sorting can place files in strange places. Google/dropbox: Thtestface@gmail.com, testerpass OneDrive: Testerface1 Dropbox: Must download files if the dropbox app is not present and then remember to re-upload the file to the newest one. This is not necessary when the app is installed as it should automatically sync using normal settings. Google drive: Can edit google docs in browser without the need for to download a file. Other files will need to be downloaded in order to edit and follow the same procedure as dropbox. One Drive: can edit using Microsoft online. It has limited functionality unless there is a paid license.

Two factor authentication What is two factor authentication? Two factor authentication is a way to protect your account from unauthorized access. If you are storing your files in the cloud it is a good idea to have two factor authentication. You can set trusted computers to save time. What is required? In most cases only a phone or an app. Dropbox and Google drive offer options for single use codes if a phone is not available. Two factor authentication is recommended to prevent access to accounts in general not just cloud storage. Google even offers 3-step authentication. It is important to note that there is no possible way to be 100% safe but these are still good deterrents in the majority of cases. Dropbox: gives a list of 10 single use codes in case the registered phone is not available Google: has the option for single use codes codes should be stored somewhere safe and accessible should they be needed.
