Types of Violence Bullying Verbal Physical Cyber Social Sexual Assault- unwelcomed sexual advances (verbal or physical) Suicide- Intentional taking of one’s own life Hate Crime- act of violence committed against an individual because of their race, nationality, religion, or sexual orientation Rape- sexual penetration by force or threat Domestic Violence- abuse in a relationship (physical and verbal)

Bullying Bullying include 3 characteristics: Intentional- the behavior is aggressive and a deliberate attempt to hurt another person. Repeated- these aggressive actions occur repeatedly over time to the same person or group of people. Power imbalance- person bullying has more physical or social power than the individual being bullied.

Verbal Bullying An individual uses verbal language (e.g., insults, teasing, etc.) to gain power over his or her peers With verbal bullying, goal is to degrade the victim, while making the aggressor look dominant and powerful. More common in girls more subtle use verbal bullying, as well as social exclusion techniques

Physical Bullying Includes any physical contact that would hurt or injure a person (hitting, kicking, punching) In elementary and middle schools, 30.5% of all bullying is physical

Social Bullying Common among youth, particularly in girls Involves spreading rumors about another person within your social group

Cyber Bullying When an individual is being tormented, threatened, harassed, humiliated, or embarrassed through the use of social media (YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, snapchat, twitter) Direct attacks: Instant message Text message Blogs Websites Emailing pictures

Effects of bullying Can affect one’s self image Can affect someone in emotional and psychological ways Can lead to low self-esteem and even depression Can reach a point where the victim is so depressed that they may turn to substance abuse or suicide

Sexual assault Involuntary sexual act when a person is coerced or physically forced to engage against their will The absence of consent defines the crime of sexual assault If found guilty in court, it is a punishable offense.

Suicide 3rd leading cause of death for ages 10-19 (about 2,000 a year) Warning signs might include: Direct statements about suicide Inability to concentrate Feelings of depression If you suspect someone has a problem, ask them, show them you care, should always be taken seriously Get professional help immediately (police/hospital) Refer to a counselor Inform parents or guardians 3rd leading cause of death for ages 10-19 (about 2,000 a year) 11th leading cause of death in the U.S. Recent data for high school students: 19% seriously consider it 15% made plans to attempt it 9% attempted it

Hate Crime Violent, prejudice crime Is a prejudice-motivated crime Examples: Ku Klux Klan (KKK)- targeted black people after the Reconstruction Era when blacks were granted citizenship and constitutional equality Holocaust- Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party targeted European Jews

Rape Sexual penetration by force or threat against a person without that person's consent. Can happen when a person is unconscious, incapacitated, or is below the legal age of consent. No means NO!!! 89,000 rape cases are reported each year in the US 16% of women experienced an attempted or completed rape 3% of men experience an attempted or completed rape 60% of rapes are never reported 95% of college rapes are never reported 47% of rapes where both victim and perpetrator had been drinking

Domestic Violence Abuse that happens in a personal relationship. Can happen between past or current partners, spouses, or boyfriends and girlfriends. Affects men and women of any ethnic group, race, or religion; gay or straight; rich or poor; teen, adult, or elderly. 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the US. That equals more than 10 million men and women in one year. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been victims of some form of physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime. 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have been victims of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime. On a typical day, there are more than 20,000 phone calls placed to domestic violence hotlines nationwide.
