House Styles GTT – Green Architecture Unit 7 – Lesson 7.1 – Introduction to Sustainable Architecture What is a Green Home? Minimizes environmental impact while maximizing design, energy and material resource efficiency. Healthier, more resource-efficient materials and processes in construction, renovation, operation and maintenance. Committing to a green home is committing to a higher quality of life for you, your family, your community, and the world. Discuss ways to make each of the home styles green while building or remodeling. Topics that should be covered in any or all of the home styles include: A green home... Takes advantage of natural and renewable resources, either through passive design or renewable energy systems. Incorporates materials that were harvested and manufactured nearby rather than shipped from far away. May or may not be certified by LEED or another third party system. Is built or renovated in a way that has minimal impact on the natural qualities of its site. Contains materials that have been recycled or repurposed and provides them a second life. Does not contain harmful chemicals that are damaging to the environment and our health. Includes energy efficient appliances and systems. Is well insulated and energy and water efficient. Features native trees and plants in its landscaping. Is designed in a space-efficient manner. As you can see, being green can mean many different things. Not every green home includes all the characteristics listed above; it's more of an ambiguous concept than one that is very clearly defined. Being green is an attitude rather than a checklist.
