Features of an Epic Poem Beginning in medias res or “in the middle of things” An invocation or prayer to the gods for inspiration at the beginning of the poem Epic similes or Homeric similes, which are more involved, more ornate than the typical simile, often lasting several lines Epithets or phrases that rename characters Which of these features have we already seen in our reading? Keep an eye out for the other features as we continue our study! 7 minutes

What did Odysseus’s men do to anger Helios? Lines 44 and following—What did Odysseus and his men do on the coast of Cicones? What was the result of their exploits?
