Write a question or summary, or draw a picture Date ASSINGMENT TITLE For Cornell notes, write the notes on the right side of the paper, and key words/summary, questions, or pictures on the left. Write a question or summary, or draw a picture INFORMATION INFORMATION

History Basics There ought to be a sense of "what was it like" when you study history. Previous night’s homework, answer the question: what is history? What period or event in histroy am I most interested in? If not any, why?

* from the Greek word “historia” - translates to learning or knowing by inquiry / asking questions What is history? Before history was written, it was an oral tradition – meaning people kept track of the past by memorizing songs and stories – it was the word that was important, not the written letter – concerned with what the hero did/interactions with gods/under what circumstances – not with dates/chronological Way we study history started with Greeks – as they migrated, they tried to describe the people, customs, what they did Past became important to provide answers, explain what caused events History is not just a story – it is factual - not a play on words as his story or her story – learning by asking questions

History Add detail to relate to the information on the right – don’t just draw a floating head History

right wrong Why study history? - know what happened and why - understand ourselves and the world - learn from past mistakes Why study history? If woke up not recognizing your room, mom, school, or friends – equals a messed up day / cause problems Those that do not know the past are doomed to repeat it – what the past teaches us is that we do not learn from the past ** show Lion King clip right wrong

Lion King clip

How is history organized? Chronological / sequential Order in which it occurred Spatial Info by location or region Topics / themes Show connections of ideas, time period, place Cause and effect An action and the result it produces Chronology, dates and time became important – like a backbone sequential – first I woke up, then I ate breakfast, next I went to school

Which form of organizing history is this – with partner

English Civil War – 1648 French Revolution – 1789 WWI – 1916? WWII – 1944 * Topic + Chronology + Spatial – Cause/Effect???

What is the cause? - Kid crying with a boo boo and someone putting a bandage on it

- Shot either from his doctor or his drug dealer – starting younger every year

How do we find out about history? Primary sources Created at the time of the event Diaries, newspapers, pictures, videos, etc Secondary sources Created after the event Textbooks, documentaries Have students discuss Diary of Anne Frank - diary, dates on pages, present tense - abridged, published later * not the actual diary - reprint

Is this a primary or secondary source? Have students discuss with partners Eyewitness Stories (from letters or current interviews) Pictures (from time or modern picture of battlefield)

Based on evidence for proof Bias (unfair belief) exists in every part of history Can be biased by our perspective (the way we see things) How do we interpret facts? * Problems with learning history – don’t have all the puzzle pieces and bias * Historians job is to view history objectively / without bias – doesn’t always work

Timelines BC / BCE = Before Christ / Before Common Era (to the left of year 1) AD / CE = Anno Domini / Common Era Chronological order – in order by date 1 1 50 AD 150 AD 50 BC 150 BC 100 BC 100 AD 200 BC * Jewish calendar starts around 3,760 BC – other calendars based on cycle of the moon
