What does this mean? Did you notice the big RELEASED letters on some of your pages? That’s because the cold readings were taken from the 2013 (poem) and 2015 (Calico and article) NCFE for English 1. That’s right! I used previous state tests to help prepare you for the one you’ll take in June. I understand some of these were hard. But again, I want you to be as prepared as you can be for this test, to the point that you’re no longer worried about it.

Analyzing the facts: Looking at both the scores and the items most missed, my conclusion: For the most part, those of you who are doing what you’re supposed to do, are learning and understanding the concepts. Those of you who are not doing what you’re supposed to, with a few exceptions, are struggling. Remember, I have tutoring on Mondays PM and Thursdays AM most weeks.

I determined these by ruling out questions missed because of difficult wording, and looked at the larger topics rather than individual questions.

Step 1 Go through your answer sheet and look at your answers Ones that are wrong will have a mark, ones that are correct will be blank Now look at your data sheet Put a √ next to the ones that are correct Leave blank or put an X next to the ones that are wrong √ x

Look at all of the questions for one standard. What does Proficient, developing, and mastery mean? This is the skill! Proficient- you understand the skill mostly. You may have some difficulties with repeated performance, but this may be due to question wording, or your own recall. Developing- This is a skill you are struggling with. You have great difficulty answering these questions mostly because you don’t understand the skill itself. Mastery- You understand the skill. 90% of the time or more you get these questions right. You might get one wrong because of wording or human error, but the skill itself is mastered.

But there were only two questions. And I got one wrong But there were only two questions! And I got one wrong. So I’m developing???? Ah, Good eye! So this is one of (of many…) the problems with testing. When you analyze the data, if you don’t have sufficient data (aka enough questions) it is hard to know what exactly your test reflects. Also, what in the world is sufficient? Do you need 8 questions, or 20? Then, how do you determine between them? I used the state standards: 60%-passing/proficient <59 developing, <90% Mastery (A)

Is this a perfect science? Absolutely not! First of all, humans make loads of mistakes (duh, we’re human, not robots) So if humans who make loads of mistakes also make tests, then tests tend to have loads of mistakes By mistakes, it could be leaving out words, making questions too difficult (most tests are made by people older and more skilled than the people taking it) Wording questions that feel “foreign” to the group of readers (word order)

Nevertheless, Testing is how North Carolina, the United States, and most of the world, determine your abilities, and thus, your potential in your future. So unfortunately, I too, must gage your strengths and weakness through testing Though, as you know, I also look at many other factors in the classroom.

Once you are done with the collecting data… Analyze it to the best of your abilities. Then write a reflection Consider these questions: Did you put in your best effort on the test day? How much did you study for this test? Did you attend tutoring/ask teacher questions in class to clarify information? Based on the data above, analyze your strengths and weakness. What can you do to improve? IF YOU FAIL THE TEST (CURVED GRADE) THEN YOU MUST TAKE DATA SHEET HOME AND GET A PARENT SIGNATURE!!!
