Definitions help to increase our awareness on how elder abuse affects potential victims seeking help by providing us a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities of other agencies and collaborative partners in the community. National Clearinghouse on Abuse in Later Life Not a Fixed Definition National organizations and government definitions vary Include your state definition here Cultural values may impact community definition So as you heard in the video, national organizations and government definitions vary. (NCALL has a handout that lists those definitions included with this presentation if you want to make copies for your presentation. If so, you might want to mention it here.) (Presenters should add their state definition here in as few a words as possible. You can always include a handout with the definition written out, but your slide should only give a brief summary of your state definition.) And as reminder, as mentioned in the video cultural values may also impact a communities definition. National Clearinghouse on Abuse in Later Life NCALL

Elder Abuse Defined “Elder abuse includes physical, sexual or psychological abuse, as well as neglect, abandonment, and financial exploitation of an older person by another person or entity, that occurs in any setting, either in a relationship where there is an expectation of trust and/or when an older person is targeted based on age or disability.” U.S. Department of Justice, (2014). For the purposes of this training we will use this definition from the Elder Justice Roadmap. Elder Justice Roadmap Project collected data from around the country was a group of experts including input from 750 stakeholders across the US. The process resulted in specific recommendations which you can access through the resource section of the worksheet that accompanies this training webinar. (Resource: Department of Justice, 2014.
