Details About Our Program SMC has three levels of ESL instruction Beginning Intermediate Advanced Classes are designed for adult learners who want to improve their English communication skills in order to get a better job, to enter college credit programs, or to be more active citizens in their community.

Integrated Skills 2.Listening/Speaking/Pronunciation 3. Reading/Writing 4. Idioms/Prepositions/Vocabulary Intermediate 1. Integrated Skills/High Integrated Skills Advanced 1. Integrated Skills/High Integrated Skills Integrated Skills: This course includes listening, speaking, reading and writing basic English. This class meets for 6 hours a week. Listening/Speaking/Pronunciation – all levels: This course will focus on improvement od the students pronunciation and comprehension of English. This class meets 3 hours a week. Reading/Writing: This course will focus on improving students’ English vocabulary, reading comprehension and writing skills. This class meets 3 hours per week. Idioms/Prepositions/Vocabulary: This course will focus on learning basic English and begin engaging in simple dialogs and conversation that are applicable to a variety of real life situations. This class meets 3 hours per week.

Integrated Skills This course includes listening, speaking, reading and writing basic English The class meets 6hrs per week Ex. M & W or T & Th Available in all levels ESL 902 – Beginning Integrated Skills ESL 903 – Low Intermediate Integrated Skills ESL 904 – High Intermediate Integrated Skills ESL 905 – Low Advanced Integrated Skills ESL 906 – High Advanced Integrated Skills

Listening, Speaking and Pronunciation This course will focus on improvement of the student’s pronunciation and comprehension of English Class meets 3hrs per week Available in all levels ESL 911 - Beginning ESL 913 – Intermediate ESL915 – Advanced

Reading and Writing This course will focus on improving students’ English vocabulary, reading comprehension and writing skills. This class meets 3hrs per week Available in all levels ESL 961 – Beginning ESL 963 - Intermediate ESL 965 – Advanced

Idioms, Prepositions, and Vocabulary This course will focus on learning basic English and begin engaging in simple dialogs and conversations that are applicable to a variety of real life situations. This class meets 3hrs per week Available in all levels ESL 971 - Beginning ESL 973 – Intermediate ESL 975 – Advanced

Citizenship Class: ESL 902 Prepare for the New Citizenship exam, interview and receive help with the N-400 application Continuous open enrollment Multi-lingual teacher MW 6:30-8:30pm

How to Register for Classes The class is open – register for classes in Bundy Rm 112 The class is closed/full – Go to instructor during the second week of class (or later) to see if there is space

Class Schedule The schedule is flexible for students Courses are available in the morning, afternoon and Saturday. Check the current schedule for course offerings and times

Changing Classes You can register anytime during the semester (Open Entry/Open Exit). As long as the class is open If feel your class is not the correct level, check with your instructor or counselor about which level may be more appropriate for you Go to Bundy Campus Room 112 to make any changes

Fees & Financial Aid SMC noncredit classes are FREE!!! You may be asked to pay for textbooks, materials, and supplies that you will need to succeed in your class.($40-$50) There is no financial aid available for noncredit courses books or supplies There is no tuition for noncredit courses. However, a few courses include a fee for materials provided to students. Students are also responsible for the purchase of books and supplies Federal Financial Aid is not available for noncredit classes. Noncredit classes are tuition free. Students are responsible for the purchase of books and supplies. Financial aid is not available for these materials.

Grades & Transfer Credit You will not receive a grade for noncredit courses you attend Noncredit courses do not transfer to another school or program, but they help prepare you to take credit college courses Non-credit courses are available to members of the community, free of charge, and do not count toward the completion of a certificate or Associate degree. However, they follow the same curriculum approval process used for credit courses. In general, credit courses are designed for students who are interested in earning college units towards a degree or certificate. Students who take credit courses receive a letter grade (A, B, C, D or F) at the end of the semester. Noncredit courses are classes offered through the Continuing Education. They are intended for students who want to gain general knowledge, learn a new skill, upgrade existing skills, or enrich their understanding about a wide range of topics. Noncredit classes are NOT applicable toward a degree. Attendance Attendance is important for successful learning and will be taken in each class If you miss 2 consecutive classes you will be dropped The more time and energy you put into your class, the faster you will learn English

Student Educational Plan Academic goals List classes for: Current semester Updates can be made See a Counselor to start your planning now! A student educational plan or SEP is the list of all courses a student needs in order to complete their goal. This list of courses can be broken into semester so that a student will know exactly what courses to register for each semester.
