Presented by Frank Archambeault IVY Plus 2011 at Dartmouth Presented by Frank Archambeault

Dartmouth Profile Students: Faculty: Buildings: Data Centers 4,200 undergrad / 1,800 graduate Faculty: 995 Tenured and Non-Tenured Buildings: 140 buildings on 269 acres Data Centers 2 primary data centers (on-campus & 5 miles away )

Network Facilities Nexus 7000’s and Cisco 6500’s (layer2) at the core – 10 gig connections Gig uplinks to all buildings – being converted to 10gig ISP services 2 ISP vendors providing 200mbps each I2 connection at 155mbps Big Green Panther state-wide fiber bacbone Cisco 35xx, 37xx switching at edge closets Gig Ethernet going forward Single and multi-Mode fiber to all buildings Copper Plant - Cat 5 through Cat6A Split pair issues 10gig (cat6A) for Academic, Cat6e for all others Aruba Wireless (1,500AP’s) – converting to Cisco 11N (1800 AP’s) Video Furnace IPTV – upgrade pending VoIP - Cisco CM 7.1.x – upgrading to CM 8.5 8,000 end points

Network Accomplishments Completed design and purchase of network upgrade Deployed new Nexus core switches Began deployment of 802.11N (cabling challenges) Began edge conversion’s Deployed Cisco UCS (Unified Computing System) 2 stand-alone systems operational in each data center Built with 3 chassis supporting approx. 33 half-height blades Each system built with dual 6120 Fabric Interconnects Built-out 3 Emergency Operation centers across campus Deployed SIP trunking with our carrier PaeTec Converted machine room to gig row switching Upgraded Stealthwatch – border monitoring appliances

Upcoming Challenges Border security tools Financial Network upgrade New money is hard to come by Thankful for previous leasing, dollars are part of operating budget Network upgrade Scheduling Campus demands for services 2 major building projects coming on-line Wireless Overall growth of wireless use Cisco 802.11N Split pair wiring Voice Converting to UCS and CM 8.x Cellular coverage Border security tools Evaluating Palo Alto, Tipping Point, Fortinet

New Initiatives Buildout and deployment of Haivision IP-TV system Moving to some HD content (20 encoders) Testing new infrastructure from Haivision Reviewing content providers (Comcast, Campus Tele-video) Where does Web based services fit What is the service we deliver? Big Green Panther Participation in State wide fiber plant (EpScor and BTOP) Dartmouth and UNH to be anchor tenants and have access via IRU to 12 pair of dark fiber Link allows us to terminate at NOX and derive more BW at lower cost Determine bandwidth needs and changes to our providers

New Initiatives To the CLOUD with you After many years of home grown Blitz email system Moving to Microsoft Office 365 Some conversions are underway, plan for 2015’s to go Cloud Services: Mail, Calendar, Link online, Sharepoint Concerns about border bandwidth and timing of Big Green Panther IPv6 – We have a registered space with ARIN Need to project plan on routing and converting
