The God of Hope 2 SAM. 12:14-15

Romans 15:13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. There are always 3 possible causes: Your fault Not your fault Maybe / some is your fault Not sure   In this passage we find intersection of loss & the God of Hope!

I. The God of hope gives us hope before loss! 2 Samuel 12:14 Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die. 2 Samuel 12:15 And Nathan departed unto his house. And the Lord struck the child that Uriah’s wife bare unto David, and it was very sick. 2 Samuel 12:16 David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth. 2 Samuel 12:17 And the elders of his house arose, and went to him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them.

I. The God of hope gives us hope before loss! 2 Samuel 12:18 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead: for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake unto him, and he would not hearken unto our voice: how will he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead? 2 Samuel 12:19 But when David saw that his servants whispered, David perceived that the child was dead: therefore David said unto his servants, Is the child dead? And they said, He is dead.

I. The God of hope gives us hope before loss! 2 Samuel 12:20 Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his apparel, and came into the house of the Lord, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat. 2 Samuel 12:21 Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou didst fast and weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst rise and eat bread. 2 Samuel 12:22 And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether God will be gracious to me, that the child may live?

I. The God of hope gives us hope before loss! 2 ideas should be kept distinct: 1. The God of hope Romans 15:13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. 2 Samuel 12:22 And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether God will be gracious to me, that the child may live?

I. The God of hope gives us hope before loss! 2 ideas should be kept distinct: 1. The God of hope 2 Samuel 10:12 Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the Lord do that which seemeth him good. 2 Samuel 16:12 It may be that the Lord will look on mine affliction, and that the Lord will requite me good for his cursing this day.

I. The God of hope gives us hope before loss! 2 ideas should be kept distinct: 1. The God of hope Jonah 3:9 Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not? 1 Samuel 14:6 And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the Lord will work for us: for there is no restraint to the Lord to save by many or by few

I. The God of hope gives us hope before loss! 2 ideas should be kept distinct: 1. The God of hope Zephaniah 2:3 Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, Which have wrought his judgment; Seek righteousness, seek meekness: It may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord’s anger. Amos 5:15 Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: It may be that the Lord God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.

I. The God of hope gives us hope before loss! 2 ideas should be kept distinct: 1. The God of hope 2 Kings 19:4 It may be the Lord thy God will hear all the words of Rab-shakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God; and will reprove the words which the Lord thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that are left.

I. The God of hope gives us hope before loss! 2 ideas should be kept distinct: 1. The God of hope Joel 2:13 And rend your heart, and not your garments, And turn unto the Lord your God: For he is gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, and of great kindness, And repenteth him of the evil. Joel 2:14 Who knoweth if he will return and repent, And leave a blessing behind him; Even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the Lord your God?

Who can tell whether God will be gracious to me…? I. The God of hope gives us hope before loss! 2 ideas should be kept distinct: 1. The God of hope Who can tell whether God will be gracious to me…? 2. Our response to the God of hope! 2 Samuel 12:15 And Nathan departed unto his house. And the Lord struck the child that Uriah’s wife bare unto David, and it was very sick. 2 Samuel 12:16 David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth.

I. The God of hope gives us hope before loss! 2 ideas should be kept distinct: 1. The God of hope 2. Our response to the God of hope!

II. The God of hope gives us hope in loss! 2 Samuel 12:23 But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.

II. The God of hope gives us hope in loss! John 14:1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. John 14:2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. John 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. John 14:4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. John 14:5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

II. The God of hope gives us hope in loss! Philippians 1:20 According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. Philippians 1:21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. Philippians 1:22 But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not. Philippians 1:23 For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: Philippians 1:24 Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.

II. The God of hope gives us hope in loss! 2 Corinthians 5:6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: 2 Corinthians 5:7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) 2 Corinthians 5:8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

II. The God of hope gives us hope in loss! Are we sure that babies go to heaven? Not because they are good / innocent / born with a sin nature 2. David’s comment is quite individual 2 Samuel 12:23 But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me. 3. This brought comfort to David  he arose, washed, anointed / lotioned himself, changed apparel, worshiped &  ate! 4. David was then able to comfort Bathsheba!

II. The God of hope gives us hope in loss! Are we sure that babies go to heaven? Elect infants dying in infancy are regenerated and saved by Christ through the Spirit; who worketh when, and where, and how he pleases; so also are all elect persons, who are incapable of being outwardly called by the ministry of the Word. ( John 3:3, 5, 6; John 3:8 )

III. The God of hope gives us hope after loss! 2 Samuel 12:24 And David comforted Bath-sheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her: and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon: and the Lord loved him. 2 Samuel 12:25 And he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah, because of the Lord.
