Roy Halladay killed in plane crash

Pitcher Roy Halladay, who won two Cy Young awards and more than 200 Major League Baseball games during a stellar career, died Tuesday in a plane crash off the Florida coast. He was only 40 years old. Although we are not yet sure how it happened, the single-engine, two seater plane, an Icon A5, crashed in very shallow water and was found upside down. He was the only person aboard. A 911 call came in at 12:06 p.m. ET saying that a small plane had crashed. There were no distress calls. Halladay pitched for 16 seasons in the MLB, the first 12 with the Toronto Blue Jays. He won the Cy Young for the Jays in 2003.He was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies before the 2010 season where he won another Cy Young. He threw a perfect game in the regular season and a no-hitter in his first playoff start against the Reds (I was there). That no-hitter is the only one in National League postseason history. More important than being a future hall of fame player, Halladay was considered a fantastic person who impacted many lives.

In Other News Democrats won key gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey, giving the party its first major taste of victory in the Trump era. The many victories experienced by the Democrats yesterday puts them in a better position to start taking control of the House and Senate from Republicans. The President and first lady, accompanied by Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, toured the Forbidden City and watched an outdoor opera performance there. Trump will also be the first foreign leader to dine there since the founding of modern China. After a few days there, the President moves on to Vietnam and the Philippines. Syria will join the Paris climate agreement, so that leaves only one country that's not signed on to it -- the United States. In June, Trump said he was pulling the United States out of the landmark climate pact, hoping to renegotiate and get a better deal. Trump's decision sparked massive outcry around the world. The United States trails only China as the world's worst emitter of carbon dioxide, according to the European Commission's emissions database.
