EPA Diesel Fuel Legislation The cleaner diesel fuel program reduces sulfur content, Provides immediate health benefits allows engine manufacturers to begin using advanced emissions control systems that further reduce harmful emissions. The diesel program regulations are located in 40 CFR Part 80 subpart I. Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) is 15 parts per million (ppm) sulfur specification Phased in for highway diesel fuel from 2006-2010. Emissions will be reduced by more than 90%. Diesel engines equipped with advanced emission control devices (generally, 2007 and later model years) must use highway ULSD fuel. Low sulfur (500 ppm) and Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) fuel will be phased in for non-road, locomotive, and marine (NRLM) engines from 2007-2014.
