Issues in Montreal Geography 103

Introduction Montreal is a metropolitan city. When so many people live in a concentrated area, there are bound to be some major problems.

Issue #1: Getting Around Look at the charts on p. 32 & 33 of your textbook Why do you think there is so much traffic in Montreal?

Solutions to Issue#1 What types of public transportation are available to people living in and around Montreal? DID YOU KNOW? 1 bus carries as many passengers as 50 cars! 1 metro moves as many people as 15 buses or 750 cars!

Issue #2: Finding Housing Look at the charts and map on p. 38 and 39 of your textbook What are some of the problems associated with housing in Montreal?

Solutions to Issue #2 What options to people have when choosing a place to live in Montreal? DID YOU KNOW? Over 13, 500 people in 2004 did not find housing in Montreal that was within their budget Low-income housing, the suburbs or cheaper regions of the island.
