The performance pieces have to be performed, recorded and assessed in Year 11. We will do lots of practise performance assessments in Year 10.

PERFORMING 30% TOTAL DURATION OF PERFORMANCE: 4-6 MINUTES NON-EXAM ASSESSMENT: ASSESSED IN SCHOOL BY YOUR MUSIC TEACHER (EXTERNALLY MODERATED) Minimum of two pieces, one of which must be an ensemble performance of at least one minute duration. The other piece(s) may be either solo and/or ensemble. One of the pieces performed must link to an area of study of your own choice

MUSICAL FORMS AND DEVICES PERFORMING 30% AREA OF STUDY 1: MUSICAL FORMS AND DEVICES A performance of a piece composed either during the Baroque, Classical or Romantic era A performance of a piece written in either, binary, ternary, rondo, variation or strophic forms A performance of a piece of music, which makes a feature of a compositional device

PERFORMING 30% MUSIC FOR ENSEMBLE AREA OF STUDY 2: MUSIC FOR ENSEMBLE A performance of a piece of ensemble music in either the chamber music tradition, or music theatre tradition or the jazz and blues tradition

PERFORMING 30% FILM MUSIC AREA OF STUDY 3: A performance of a piece of music used in a film or composed specifically for a film

PERFORMING 30% POPULAR MUSIC AREA OF STUDY 4: A performance of any genre of popular music

TOTAL DURATION OF COMPOSITIONS: 3-6 MINUTES COMPOSING 30% TOTAL DURATION OF COMPOSITIONS: 3-6 MINUTES NON-EXAM ASSESSMENT: YOUR COMPOSITIONS WILL BE MARKED IN SCHOOL BY YOUR MUSIC TEACHER AND EXTERNALLY MODERATED Two compositions, one of which must be in response to a brief set by the exam board - there will be a choice of four briefs, each one linked to a different area of study. The briefs will be released in September of Year 11 The second composition is a free composition for which you can set your own brief

HERE ARE SOME SAMPLE BRIEFS – THEY ARE BASED ON THE AREAS OF STUDY REMEMBER THAT ONE OF YOUR COMPOSITIONS HAS TO BE COMPOSED IN RESPONSE TO A BRIEF SET BY THE EXAMINATION BOARD IN THE SEPTEMBER OF YEAR 11 HERE ARE SOME SAMPLE BRIEFS – THEY ARE BASED ON THE AREAS OF STUDY Compose a piece of music in ternary form that is to be performed at a school awards ceremony Compose a pop song, aimed at raising money for charity in a local Music for Youth concert Compose music for the opening sequence/scene in a new action movie to be premiered at the local cinema Compose a piece for three instruments to be performed in a showcase event at the local music college

APPRAISING 40% Written examination: 1 hour 15 minutes Eight questions – based around 4 areas of study You will be developing skills in appraising music through the study of a wide range of music, linked to the four areas of study and two set works
