Important features of Africa Countries studied in this unit: South Africa, Congo, Somalia. Sierra Leone, Chad Oceans bordering Africa Indian Ocean Atlantic Ocean Deserts in Africa Sahara Desert Namibian Desert

Sudan – causes of the crisis Natural Crisis Human Crisis Soils are poor Villagers have ben forced out of their homes Little or no rain The Janjaweed attack the people living there In the South of the country there are very few natural resources The Christian control the oil Large deserts Lots of fighting

The problems in Sudan Janjaweed have burnt the crops so people have no food to eat The Government pays the Janjaweed to fight with groups of people it does not like People have become refugees as they have been attacked People have been captured and taken away to be trained as soldiers The soil has been destroyed by drought so crops cannot be grown

Why has piracy developed in Somalia? Large number of armed and experienced warlords from the civil war The government is not in full control High returns from ransoms Huge coastal area which makes it difficult to police and find the pirates Much of the population is reliant on food aid People are on low wages so turn to piracy for money Pirates are viewed as heroes by the people There are no fish for the fishermen so they have lost their jobs and turn to piracy to get money
