Foundations of Gov’t Mr. Lutke Civics

Review Magna Carta- Limited the powers of the King and granted certain rights to the English people Parliament- Developed into the legislative body. English Bill of Rights(1689)- Guaranteed free elections to parliament, the right to a fair trial and eliminated cruel and unusual punishment.

Philosophical Influences John Locke- English writer, “natural rights” life liberty and property Jean-Jacques Rousseau, “People alone had the right to determine how they should be governed. Baron de Montesquieu, Separation of powers

Colonial Traditions of Self-Government Colony A group of people in one place who are ruled by a parent country elsewhere. 1607- Jamestown, 1st permanent English colony Jamestown Gov’t- House of Burgesses It was a representative legislature What does this mean?

Pilgrims arrive 1620- Pilgrims built the Settlement called Plymouth In Massachusetts. Plymouth Gov’t Before the mayflower landed the 41 men aboard signed the mayflower compact Compact- an agreement or contract, among a group of people

Mayflower Compact Developed a tradition of Direct Democracy Citizens held town meetings to address local problems and issues. Anyone could attend these meetings and express their opinions, but only land owning men could vote. By 1639 some pilgrims left Mass. and went to Connecticut where the developed America’s first written constitution. “Fundamental Orders of Connecticut” As more colonies popped up all over the East coast the colonists became accustomed to governing themselves

Creation of the 13 colonies New England Colonies Mass., Rhode Island, Conn., New Hampshire Middle Colonies NY, NJ, Penn. and Delaware Southern Colonies Virginia, Maryland, N & S Carolina, Georgia

Reasons people came Religious Dissenters'- People who followed a faith other than the official religion of England Example: Puritans Pilgrims “people on a religious journey” Economic Opportunity- Especially in the south This lead to the system of indentured servants.

Think Critically Make Comparisons Read Pages 42 to 43 and answer the following question How were the lives of slaves and indentured servants the same? How were they different?
