Lord of the Flies Chapters 1-3

The Sound of the Shell “The boy with fair hair lowered himself down the last few feet of rock and began to pick his way toward the lagoon…All round him the long scar smashed into the jungle was a bath of heat” (Golding 7). The Island Pages 9-10, 12, 28, 29 Shaped like a boat Creepers = Vines What is the scar?

The Conch Found in the weeds on page 16 Used to call the boys out of the jungle Ralph controls the conch

Character Chart Create a chart in your notes for the following characters: Ralph Jack Piggy Simon This chart is for your notes and future essay prep You and a pod have 10 minutes to work on this Within the chart write quotes and information about the characters that show who they are and how they act Be sure to leave room for more information that you can add while reading the next chapters

Chart Ideas/Examples Simon as a symbol of Christ Jack’s Mental State Carpenter (builds huts) No offensive traits Stands up for the mistreated (Piggy) Island is his Eden (perfect place) Children come to him for help and direction Jack’s Mental State “At length he let out his breath in a long sigh and opened his eyes…eyes that in this frustration seemed bolting and nearly mad” (48). “He tried to convey the compulsion to track down and kill that was swallowing him up” (51).

Journal 1: Conflict Jack the Hunter Ralph the Builder “There was only the faintest indication of a trail here; a cracked twig…He lowered his chin and stared at the traces as though he would force them to speak to him” (48). “Two shelters were in position, but shaky. This one was a ruin. ‘And they keep running off. You remember the meeting? How everyone was going to work hard until the shelters were finished?’” (50). We have two leaders with different styles and motivations. What kind of problems might this cause? Has either one been an effective leader? Can either control those under his command?

Theme and Symbol Timelines Within your notes create timelines for the main symbols and themes that are found in Lord of the Flies Quotes and examples showing the evolution of each will be quite helpful The more complete your notes, the better you will be able to successfully complete the essay at the end of the novel Once again, leave room for additions during future readings Civilization Freedom Innocence Desire vs. Need Leadership Fire Conch Nature Blood The Hunt
