Presentation transcript:

Our goal… to inspire 40 million young people Messengers of Peace is a 10-year global initiative for all member countries and national Scout organizations (NSOs) of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) to inspire individual Scouts to be messengers of peace in their communities. The initiative was begun by King Abdullah in Saudi Arabia as he saw the BSA’s Eagle Scout Service Project required for the Eagle Scout rank. Most NSOs do not have the community service requirements we have in the BSA. This has been very inspirational for all the NSOs who have been able to request grant monies to coordinate large-scale community service projects based on the spirit of this program. We in the BSA, as we are from a wealthy country, are not permitted to request a grant from the Messengers of Peace program. We still hope to encourage our membership to continue participating in community service requirements included in each of our rank advancement requirements and by this effort be part of the world Scouting initiative to be messengers of peace in their communities.

Service projects Types of Service projects – around the world and in the BSA Projects should encompass harmony between individuals, between communities, or between humankind and the environment. For almost every service project in the BSA, there is a way that you can describe each project as a Messengers of Peace project. Peace Light from Bethlehem ceremonies Utah Troop at the 2013 NSJ Messengers of Peace Day of Service scraping weeds in Athens, WV Pack & Troop 257 in The California Inland Empire Council having a blanket, coat and food drive Tree care training in Africa Boy Scouts from St. Paul Minnesota volunteering with Habitat for Humanity

Recognition Any Scout or Scouter who participates in a qualifying project is eligible to wear a Messengers of Peace ring patch around the World Crest on his or her uniform. Individuals or a unit representative can purchase these ring patches at a local Scout shop, council service center, or Scoutstuff.org . Due to the number of different languages in world Scouting, you can see the ring patches that have been created for a few of the languages here.
