Welcome to Maywood Middle School Incoming 6th Grade Parent Orientation Electives Tuesday, March 13, 2018

WEB – Where Everyone Belongs Program to help ease the transition into middle school Late August – Date TBD  Groups of 10-12 lead by carefully selected and trained 8th graders Students will be in WEB groups all year for in-school and after school activities: Movie SDR Lessons Game Day Check-in Lunches

Full Year Music Electives Band, Orchestra, Choir Open to all 6th graders – No previous experience necessary All music classes meet daily and are yearlong, progressive programs Each year of instruction builds on the previous year

Music Elective Overview We focus on building basic individual skills to prepare students for participation in instrumental and choral ensemble settings – posture, technique, tone, use of air, breath support, vowel production, diction, placement of bow or stick.

ELL (English Language Learners) Students qualify through statewide WELPA test and Home Language Survey Class is yearlong Class emphasizes English writing, reading, thinking skills and homework assistance.

6th Grade PE/Health Two trimesters of PE for each sixth grade student If the student has a year long elective, one trimester of PE can be waived Required Uniform Fee of $14 One trimester of Health for every 6th grade student

District FLASH Review The Issaquah School District will be holding a presentation of the District FLASH Curriculum at the district office on: TENTATIVE DATES: Thursday, October 11th  at 6:00PM   AND Saturday, October 13th at 9:00AM. *If you plan to opt your child out of the FLASH Curriculum you must attend this presentation every year!

6th Grade P.E. What do they need for Class? Students attend P.E Daily for 2 full Trimesters unless they have another year long Elective Students are Graded daily on preparedness, effort and behavior What do they need for Class? P.E. Uniform ($14 paid to bookkeeper, will receive 1st day of P.E.) P.E. Shoes (athletic shoes/cross trainers but no Converse) Inhaler if needed for exercise induced Asthma Composition notebook/pencil

Fitness Days One day a week is dedicated to fitness days in P.E. The purpose of this is to get students heart rates up for 15 continuous minutes and teach them what it feels like. Activities on these days include: -Running activities (the mile, cross country run, on/offs, etc) -Relays -Circuit training

TechSmart TechSmart: Students explore different technologies to develop problem-solving skills, technology literacy/fluency, and digital citizenship. This is a required trimester-long class. Upon successful completion of the course, students satisfy the high school technology graduation requirement.
