Through School/Life Balance Managing Your Time Through School/Life Balance http://www.dreams-goals.com/resources/powerpoints/ Presented by: Kathleen E. High, M.Ed., CCSP, GCDF-I Independent Education/Career Consultant Your Dreams & Goals

What You Don’t Know CAN Hurt! Many First-Time Students: Take Too Many Classes Are Not Prepared For the Work Load In College Do Not Set A Homework Plan Do Not Consider Family Responsibilities Procrastinate On Unpleasant Tasks Like Homework Get Distracted By “Life” Get Behind In Their School Work Do Not Pass Classes Because It Was Not a Priority

Plan For College Success! School/Work Load Balance How Many Units To Take Make Time For Homework Keep In Mind Where Do You Need To Improve? Where To Go For Help

School/Work Load Balance You Need Time For: Work Classes Homework Managing Personal Responsibilities Rest, Play, Social Time Unexpected Emergencies

How Many Units To Take Don’t Over Do It! If You Work (Average) Then Take No More Than: 0 Hours Per Week 12 – 14 Units Per Semester 20 Hours or Less Per Week 6 – 12 Units Per Semester 40 Hours Per Week 1 – 6 Units Per Semester

Make Time for Homework As a General Rule: For Every One Hour (or unit) Spent in Class Plan Two Hours Outside of Class for Homework Example: Sample Schedule = 24 Hours of Homework Number of Units Taken Time Needed for Homework 1 Class = 3 units 6 Hours Per Week 4 Classes = 12 units 24 Hours Per Week Sun Mon Tues Wed Thur Fri Sat 4 hrs 3 hrs 5 hrs

Keep in Mind…. The Numbers Given Are Just An Estimate – You Should Adjust As Needed Some Majors Are Harder Than Others Allow More Time For Hard Classes Balance Hard Classes with Easy Classes Accelerated Classes (Summer, Intersession, 8-week Classes) Need More Time for Studying Study When You Are Most Alert! Mornings, Afternoons, Evenings Take 10-Minute Break for Every Hour of Study

Where Do You Need To Improve? Are You Taking Appropriate Number of Units Based on Your Work Schedule? Do You Make Time For Personal/Family Responsibilities? Have You Allowed Enough Time For Studying In Your Weekly Schedule? Do You Have Your Homework Schedule Set? Does Your Schedule Allow For Emergencies And The Unexpected?
