Historical Thinking Review

Journal (kind of) OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to… Successfully use sourcing, corroboration, causation and close reading to analyze primary sources AGENDA: Textbooks Review Preassessment “10th Grade Skills” Instead of a traditional journal, we’ll use the first 5 minutes of class to finish the student survey from last class. If you’ve already finished, work on something for another class, or read a book. I don’t want anybody on their phones during this time.

“10th Grade Skills” You guys are the first ones in our new program. These are the skills that you would have already mastered: Sourcing Corroboration (Comparison) Causation Close Reading (Prioritizing evidence/reasons/counterclaims)

Sourcing Purpose: Determine the reliability of the author

Corroboration Purpose: Make sure the author isn’t off his rocker How: Comparing different accounts of the same event. Generally, the more “corroborating sources” (sources that agree) of an account, the more likely it is to be true.

Causation Purpose: Figure out why something happened How: Identify previous events that led to the event you’re studying Causation works the other way, too. What did your event lead to?

Close Reading Purpose: Make sure that you understand what the author is saying How: Identifying details that impact your interpretation of an event.

Where do we go from here? Practice! Journals, note sheets, etc. If you don’t feel confident in the terms, see me individually. Don’t get left behind!
