Agenda Do Now: Student Survey Student Introductions/Attendance Teacher Introduction Classroom Procedures and Expectations Begin Native American Lit Unit – What We Know/Modern Misconceptions

Attendance/Introductions When I call your name, raise your hand, say “here,” and tell the class one interesting thing about yourself. Take a moment to figure out what you’re going to say. My dream career is to be… I really don’t like… I’m good at… I’d like to get better at… I’ve never… One of my biggest fears is… This summer, I… One of my goals is to… One celebrity I would like to meet is… The most interesting place I’ve ever gone is… Something people don’t know about me is… At home, I have… My favorite hobbies are… Or, create your own! ☺

Meet Ms. Lane! Third year at Jennings Graduated with my BA and MA from Truman I love comics, anime, cartoons, and all things geeky! Have a puppy named Watson Went to Ecuador this summer Anime club sponsor (in my room every Thursday starting next week) – Talk to me if you’re interested in joining! Class website is lanejennings.weebly.com (I’ll show you later)

Procedures and Expectations Do Nows, Entering, and Folders/Binders Pencils and Pencils – after today, you’ll be expected to bring them!  Restroom and other hall passes Three strike system If you get to three strikes in one period… Conference after class or school Parent phone call/email Write Up/ISS Ms. Lane’s pet peeves: Talking over others (or myself) Getting out of seats Hateful language.

Letter to Ourselves… A new school semester brings opportunities for new goals, new habits, and new beginnings. Your assignment is to write a letter to your future self about what you hope to accomplish and experience this year In other words, when you look back on this year, what do you hope you will have done? How do you hope you will have grown and changed? Your letter will be given back to you – and only you! – at the end of the school year.

Letter to Ourselves… You have 30 minutes to write at least two paragraphs  As you write, consider the following ideas and questions: How did last semester go for you? How were your grades? What are some ways that you’d like to change this semester? What kinds of grades do you hope to earn? What habits would you like to develop or break? Do you have any athletic or sports goals? What are your academic goals? Do you want to improve your grades? Be more organized? Be more responsible? Decrease your tardies or improve attendance? What do you want to do differently this semester from last semester?

Journal Heading Name Date Class/Block Assignment Title (for today, it’s “Types of Conflict”)

Conflict Definition: In literature, conflict is the struggle between opposing forces in a story. It creates tension and excitement for the reader.

Conflict in Literature 1. Think about the last book you read OR the last movie you watched. What was the conflict the main character had to deal with?

Internal vs External Two Types of Conflict…. Internal Conflict External Conflict Person vs. Self Person vs. Person Person vs. Society Person vs. Circumstances Internal vs External

Internal Conflict There is only ONE type of internal conflict. Person vs. Self. A struggle within one's self; a person must make a decision, overcome a fear, resist an urge, etc. Internal conflict is NOT visible to others Example: Ms. Lane really wants to go shopping after school, but she also has papers to grade. She is conflicted about whether or not to go.

External COnflict There are THREE types of external (outside) conflict: Person vs. Person Person vs. Society Person vs. Circumstances

PERSON VERSUS PERSON Person versus Person Ms. Lane wants to take her students on a field trip, but Dr. Key says no. Josh’s best friend is pressuring him to skip school on Friday, but Josh wants to attend. A mother tries to put her 2 year old down for a nap, but the child keeps getting up.

PERSON VERSUS SOCIETY Person Versus Society Neo in the Matrix Katniss in The Hunger Games Clarissa hates wearing uniforms and comes to school in jeans, but the principals and teachers make her change her clothes every time. You want pizza for dinner, but everyone else in your family wants spaghetti.

PERSON VERSUS CIRCUMSTANCES A ship crew knows they must deliver some important packages but there is a TERRIBLE storm brewing. Jordan wants to take his girlfriend on a picnic, but it has been raining all day. Maria needs to type a paper for school, but her family’s computer is not working.

Review Internal Conflict External Conflict Person vs. Self Person vs. Person Person vs. Society Person vs. Circumstances

Now You Tell Me A young girl wants to be a famous actress but has terrible stage fright Two brothers both want to be athlete of the year and have to compete against each other A new business owner wants to change the world through his recycling program, but the community prefers to throw things away.

Now You Tell Me Janie and her sister want to have a picnic in the park, but it’s very chilly outside. Leo is extremely angry with his brother for wearing his shoes without asking. He wants to shove him, but he doesn’t want to get in trouble. Lauren is trying to get her advisory class to welcome a new student. However, all of her classmates want to tease the new girl.

Exit Slip Choose ONE of the types of conflicts (person vs self, person vs person, person vs society, or person vs circumstances. Then, write a short story (at least half a page) about a character dealing with your chosen type of conflict. Your story needs a beginning, middle, and end – show me what you can do!  Again, make sure the conflict is resolved by the end of your story.
